In North Carolina, however, individuals with a total SAT® score of 1100 (Verbal and
Quantitative only) are exempt from Core testing requirements for teacher education program
administration.


Individuals with a total SAT score of less than 1100 (Verbal and Quantitative only), but a
score of at least 550 on the Verbal test, are exempt from the Core tests in Reading and
Writing for teacher education program admission.
Individuals with a total SAT score of less than 1100 (Verbal and Quantitative only), but a
score of at least 550 on the Math test, are exempt from the Core test in Mathematics for
teacher education program admission.
Likewise, individuals with a composite ACT® score of 24 are exempt from Core testing
requirements for teacher education program admission.


Individuals with a composite ACT score of less than 24, but with a score of at least 24 on
the English test, are exempt from the Core tests in Reading and Writing for teacher
education program admission.
Individuals with a composite ACT score of less than 24, but a score of at least 24 on the
Math test, are exempt from the Core test in Mathematics for teacher education program
admission.
For program completers:
Elementary and Special Education: General Curriculum
Effective July 1, 2014, all elementary education (K–6) and special education general curriculum
program completers shall be required to pass the following tests: the North Carolina Foundations
of Reading and General Curriculum tests (patterned after the MTEL given in Massachusetts).
The General Curriculum test includes a multi-subject sub test and a math sub test. The latter
must be passed. See www.nesinc.com for further information about the tests.
In addition Special Education General Curriculum completers must also take the Praxis II
Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities, Praxis 0383.
For middle grades, secondary and specialty areas such as art, Spanish and Physical
Education and Health:
Praxis II will be required for all applicants for an initial teaching for candidates completing
licensure/program requirements on/after July 1, 2014. Check www.ets.org for test information.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Students who have already taken and passed Praxis II but who will not complete the
program prior to July 1, 2014 will be required to meet the new licensure testing
requirements.
