GPA and Exam Requirements for Teacher Licensure Programs
This information only addresses the GPA and exam requirements for admission to Teacher Education Programs. Candidates must meet all
requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program, to Early Field Experiences, and to Student Teaching, as outlined in the Policies

Admission to the Teacher Education Program, to Early Field Experiences, and to Student Teaching
GPA and Exam Requirements Only
Elementary Education PreK-6

GPA: 2.75 over all college work, all professional studies, in the major, and over all RU work; Fall 2014 Teacher Education
Program applicants must meet a 3.0 GPA requirement in these areas.
 2 concentration areas
Must pass the following tests prior to Admission to the Teacher Education Program and to the Early Field Experience:
 VCLA score of 470
 Praxis I composite score of 532, equivalent SAT or ACT scores, OR VCLA score of 470 and Praxis I Math 178 or better
 Praxis II, Elementary Content Knowledge (paper base code 0014, computer base code 5014) score of 143
Must pass before or during Student Teaching for program completion and licensure:
 RVE (Reading for Virginia Educators: Elementary and Special Education Teachers Assessment) score of 157
Applications are due:
 Applications to the Teacher Education Program and to Fall Early Field Experience and Spring Student Teaching due Feb. 1st
OR
 Applications to the Teacher Education Program and to Spring Early Field Experience and Fall Student Teaching are due Oct.

Special Education, General Curriculum K-12 for Five Year Program
 GPA: 2.50 over all college work, all professional studies, in the major, and over all RU work. (4th year)
Must pass the following tests prior to Admission to the Teacher Education Program and to the Early Field Experience:
 VCLA score of 470
 Praxis I composite score of 532, equivalent SAT or ACT scores, OR VCLA score of 470 and Praxis I Math 178 or better
5th Year/Graduate, 2 semesters of Student Teaching requires:
Successful completion of 4-year requirements and degree conferred
During last semester of Senior Year apply to College of Graduate and Professional Studies.
 GPA 2.75
Must pass before or during Student Teaching for licensure

RVE (Reading for Virginia Educators: Elementary and Special Education Teachers Assessment) score of 157
Recommended to be “highly qualified” but not required for licensure

Praxis II, Elementary Content Knowledge (paper base code 0014, computer base code 5014) score of 143
Applications are due:

4th year/Senior Year: 2 semesters of Early Field Experience, application due Feb. 1 st in Junior Year.
5th Year/Graduate: 2 semesters of Student Teaching, application is due Feb 1 st in Senior Year.


GPA 2.5 over all college work, all professional studies, major course work, and all RU work; If pursuing DHH at the graduate
level, must meet 2.75 for admission to College of Graduate and Professional Studies and must maintain a 3.0 to be retained.
Must pass the following tests prior to Admission to the Teacher Education Program and to the Early Field Experience

VCLA score of 470

Praxis I composite score of 532, equivalent SAT or ACT scores, OR Passing score on VCLA and Praxis I Math 178

 Must attempt Praxis II, Elementary Content Knowledge (paper based code 0014, computer base code 5014)
Must be admitted to the College of Graduate and Professional Studies and pass the following tests prior to Admission to the Teacher
Education Program (fifth year):

Master of Science in Education:





GPA of 3.0 on all undergraduate coursework

GRE scores

Two letters of recommendation

Personal letter

Concentration; Content Studies: Mathematics; Curriculum and Instruction with or without initial licensure; ; Curriculum and
Instruction includes an option in Secondary Science Education; Five- year Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education;
Educational Technology

If also applying for initial licensure (post-baccalaureate) choose one of the following; Elementary (PreK-6), Middle (6-8 with
TWO subject areas), Secondary (6-12 Social Studies or Mathematics; Secondary Science Education Option in C/I: Biology,
Chemistry, Earth Science or Physics)

Students seeking initial licensure must pass the following exams for admittance into the Teacher Education Program:
VCLA, 470
Praxis I, composite score of 532, equivalent SAT or ACT, or VCLA score of 470 plus Praxis I Math 178
Praxis II in content area
Master of Science in Educational Leadership:

Submission of application for Graduate Admission, including application fee

Official transcripts for all prior undergraduate and graduate coursework

GPA of 2.75 on all undergraduate coursework

GRE scores

Minimum of 3 years K-12 classroom teaching experience

3 References, 1 from most recent principal, 1 from superintendent

Option 1 (36 hours)for students who DO NOT hold a prior graduate degree from an accredited program

Option 2 (30 hours) for student who DO hold a prior graduate degree from an accredited program

360 hours of internship experience to be fully licensed

SLLA, School Leaders Licensure Assessment (1011) passing score of 163

Professional Development in Educational Leadership Certificate- six-course sequence, satisfied VODE Alternative Licensure
Requirements for Educational Licensure (Applicants must meet existing admissions standards for the Educational Leadership
program, have a master’s degree and be under consideration for administrative duties or employment in a school division)
Master of Science in Literacy Education
With potential licensure endorsement as a Reading specialist

