Facilities and Maintenance Technician The Organization The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is the award-winning aquarium of the Salish Sea located on the waterfront in Sidney, British Columbia. The Centre is owned and operated by the New Marine Centre Society, a federally registered not-for-profit charity. The Society is governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors. Working Relationships The facilities and maintenance technician reports to the executive director and has a handson multi-faceted role which requires unsupervised work as well as team work. On occasion, the maintenance technician will schedule and supervise the work of specialized trades or contractors in the building. Working Style Page 1 Due to the size of the facility, each team member must be a self-starter who accepts and welcomes the need to be proactive and hands-on to support the delivery of all aspects of our visitor experiences. The ability to set priorities with the executive director and then deliver results on time with minimal need for direct supervision is essential. 01/30/14 Hours This is a full-time position, 32 hours per week, plus routine emergency on-call duty. Additional hours may be scheduled based on the needs of the Centre. The executive director, in consultation with the employee, will set the schedule. Primary Objectives The technician maintains high standards of maintenance, cleanliness and safety for all systems, equipment, visitor and work spaces in the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. The maintenance technician responds appropriately routine maintenance, as well as to emergencies, works in accordance with health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations, and approved policies. The maintenance technician takes pride in work quality, workspace organization, and personal appearance. Systems Maintenance Duties Support the work of the husbandry team to keep the animal collection healthy and safe Performs complex and routine maintenance tasks related to aquarium life support and building operating systems including backwashing, flow adjustments and system monitoring. Make certain that the building and all systems are maintained and operated in a manner that provides a safe work environment for staff, volunteers and visitors Troubleshooting and preventative maintenance services for: o Animal life support systems o Ventilation and heating/cooling (HVAC) systems o Cleaning of electrical controllers (Electrical work by others) o Cleaning and servicing audio/visual and other electronic equipment desirable o Minor plumbing repairs o Minor building repairs o Door systems o Fire, security and safety systems Scheduling and supervising the work of specialized contractors Keeping a supply and inventory of replacement parts and especially critical backup system parts Making certain that maintenance and operational records are complete and accurate Provide emergency response service in the event power failures or systems alarms (This could amount to approximately 150 additional hours/year) Sweeps, mops , floors; washes walls and windows, vacuums, dusts and performs other cleaning duties Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment Cleans and mops washrooms and replaces soap or towels Empties wastebaskets and collects and disposes of refuse Manages inventory of cleaning products Moves and arranges chairs, tables and other furniture or equipment 01/30/14 Page 2 Janitorial/Custodial Duties Cleans staff kitchen surfaces and equipment Makes minor repairs to furniture, electrical fixtures, windows and shades, locks, faucets, and other equipment Performs some grounds keeping activities such as clearing snow, removing litter and debris Operates power tools, cleaning equipment, work truck and other related equipment Performs a variety of errands related to maintenance/janitorial tasks Routine maintenance: replacing bulbs, maintaining signage, exhibits Other duties as assigned Qualifications Demonstrated experience in facility systems maintenance and janitorial/custodial duties Experience may include a millwright, equipment service technician, building systems maintenance , construction experience, facilities janitorial Aquarium experience an asset Clean driver’s abstract First aid certification preferred (Level 1 minimum) WHMIS experience an asset Skills Hands-on multi-tasker, proven ability to be ‘handy’, conscientious and very thorough Evidence of being able to pick up knowledge quickly through hands-on experience Ability to work independently or as part of a small team Customer service experience desirable Strong communications skills, written, spoken, listening Computer skills includes Microsoft office preferred How to Apply Page 3 Email cover letter and resume to Nancy Barbour: board@oceandiscovery.ca. 01/30/14
