Job Description
Title: Animal Care Technician (I and II)
Reports to: Director of Operations
Summary
The Animal Care Technician performs routine animal care and related duties at the Dubuque
Regional Humane Society. The Animal Care Technician must always strive for excellence and
be enthusiastic and a team player. Animal experience is preferred, but not required; training will
be provided.
Essential Job Functions (Animal Care Technician I and II):
 Thoroughly clean animal enclosures and provide animals with new blankets, food, and
water
 Socialize with animals as you remove them from their enclosures for cleaning, to ensure
the animal is adoptable and sociable
 Complete laundry and dishes for each required area of Kinsey’s Campus
 Walk dogs
 Perform temperament evaluations on dogs to ensure animal is safe and adoptable
 Restrain dogs for vaccinations and temperament evaluations
 Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to ensure a clean, pleasant, and organized
work environment including all areas that customers can and cannot see
 Maintain good care of cleaning equipment
 Janitorial duties, including sweeping, mopping, taking out garbage, snow removal, and
salting sidewalks
 Wipe down counters and windows
 Pick up feces and wipe up urine in animal enclosures between cleanings
 Greet and provide timely, compassionate, and courteous service to customers, visitors,
and volunteers as they enter Kinsey’s Campus
 Provide accurate information to customers and volunteers about the DRHS’ policies and
procedures
 Assist customers and volunteers with animals for socialization
 Maintain knowledge of animal inventory, shelter events, and special needs of the shelter
 Safely transfer animals from one animal enclosure to another and ensure proper
documentation
 Receive and accurately record in-kind donations and store in proper locations
Other Duties (Animal Care Technician I)
 Perform adoptions and adoption holds
 Handle adoption returns and issue gift certificates for exchange
 Receive owner surrendered and stray animals
 Create lost and found reports
 Schedule Veterinary appointments

General office duties, including answering phones, data entry into PetPoint, filing,
copying, and faxing
Receive payments for services by cash or credit card
Balance cash registers and count deposit cash at the end of the night
Other duties as assigned
Requirements
 Have steadfast belief in the mission, policies, and procedures of the DRHS
 Animal handling skills
 Multi-tasking skills
 Cash-handling skills
 Customer service skills
 Data entry and basic computer skills
 Flexibility in hours
 Lift up to 25 lbs
 Stand and sit for long periods of time, bend, twist, and stoop
Working Environment
The Animal Care Technicians I and II will encounter regular exposure to animal odors, diseases,
possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and high noise levels.
