OCS Algebra IB Syllabus Spring 2014
Course Description:
OCS Algebra IB provides students the opportunity to study traditional topics from algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics in a
problem-centered, connected approach. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular,
and verbal representations of relationships and use those representations to solve problems. Appropriate technology, from
manipulatives to calculators and application software, should be used regularly for instruction and assessment.
Course Initiatives:

The learner will perform operations with numbers, algebraic expressions, and matrices to solve problems.
The learner will describe geometric figures in the coordinate plane algebraically.
The learner will collect, organize, and interpret data to solve problems.
The learner will use relations and functions to solve problems.
EXPECTATIONS/PROCEDURES:
First, it is imperative that you have the required materials each day for taking notes. There is a materials list at the bottom of
this page. Students will have a daily homework assignment. Homework will be checked the following day at the beginning of each
period. Daily homework grades are based on effort and completion at the teacher’s discretion.
Secondly, it will be your responsibility to make up work and class notes. You will be given a chance to turn in missed work
throughout the semester. You are allowed a maximum of 5 absences per semester. Therefore, it is important that you are in class each
day. If you earn a 69 or less on your major class assessments, you will receive an INCOMPLETE for the assignment. You are then
allowed two weeks to complete an alternate assignment or may make corrections to the assignment depending on the particular
assessment to receive a 70 on the assignment.
Throughout the mathematics department, students are required to keep an organized, sequential notebook throughout the
semester. I recommend buying a 1.5 or 2 inch notebook. Students will be required to keep a notebook in ALL of their math classes at
Fairmont High School; therefore, a designated “math” notebook is a good investment. One inch notebooks are not large enough to
keep notes, worksheets, and other assignments for an entire semester. Notebook checks will be given twice each 9-week grading
period and will count as a quiz grade. In addition to purchasing a notebook, I highly recommend purchasing a TI-84 graphing
calculator. Students will need these calculators in all of their math classes at FHS as well as college classes. Calculators will be
provided to use in class; however, they will not be able to take calculators home. You will also be required to keep a composition
notebook as a journal. The journal will include daily reflections on the lessons and other writing assignments and activities
throughout the semester.
This year FHS will be implementing the North Carolina Virtual Public Schools blended learning program for our OCS
students. This is a program involving co-teaching between myself and a certified virtual teacher via the Internet. I will be
collaborating with my partner teacher on a daily and weekly basis to meet your child's educational needs. Some assignments will be
submitted by the students on-line while others will be handed in to me. On-line assignments will be graded by the classroom teacher.
The OCS classroom teacher will maintain the official grade book, pulling grades from the grade book in Blackboard as needed.
Most importantly, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the course goals and underlying objectives listed
above. Students will be evaluated on the assignments given during the semester using the grading criteria and grading standards listed
below. You will need to complete all the assignments to be successful. In addition to assignments provided by the teacher, you will be
given a North Carolina End-Of-Course test to determine your level of ability. The EOC will be calculated as your final exam grade
which is 25% of the final course grade.
Extra help will be available after school in addition to the tutoring/reading period available at the end of third period. If you
wish to attend tutoring after school, you must be present no later than 10 minutes after the bell sounds ending fourth period.
