Technology Applications Email: nick.cowan@lifeschools.net Life School Oak Cliff Middle School 2014-2015 Instructor: Coach Nick Cowan Room: P10 Course Description: This course develops basic technology skills focusing on word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphic programs, operating systems, webpage design, and keyboarding. Course Objectives: Students learn to use computer technology, by identifying task requirements, planning search strategies and using technology to analyze, and evaluate information. Students will select the technology appropriate for the task, synthesize knowledge, create a solution, and evaluate the results. Course Materials Students will be issued a lifeschools.org – Google account that will be used to distribute and collect assignments. Access to the internet away from campus is recommend to give students the opportunity to work on assignments outside of class time. When necessary, time in the computer lab can be scheduled before or after school. It is recommended that each student have a pair of headphones to assist with assignments that require sound to be used on the computer. Supply List: 1 - Ream of copy paper (1 ream = 500 sheets) 1 - Box of tissues 1 - 8 oz. bottle of hand sanitizer Classroom Procedures Classroom Rules: 1. Instant obedience 2. Respect for others 3. Respect for property 4. Diligence to duty 5. LLP (Listening Learning Position) Student Expectations Students are expected respect the instructor, each other, and Life School policy. Students are expected to come to class prepared and sit at their assigned seat. Students are expected to work diligently during the entire period on the assignments for the particular day. Students are expected to participate and ask questions. Computer and Internet Acceptable Use Policy The Life School Acceptable Use Policy can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook. If a Life School user violates any of these provisions, his or her account may be terminated and future access could possibly be denied in addition to other possible disciplinary measures as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Grading Scale Tests/Major Projects All other assignments 50% 50% Class Assignments/Calendar 3+ test and/or Major Projects per six weeks 7+ class work/homework/participation/ warm-up per six weeks Turning in Assignments Assignments are considered “turned in” when they have been saved to the proper in the student’s Google Drive. Assignments that have not been saved to the proper folder are not “turned in” and will not be graded. Late Assignments Late assignments are penalized per the Life School Student Handbook policy. Academics Dishonesty Students are expected to do their own work. As stated in the Life School Student handbook, cheating will not be tolerated, and a referral will be issued. A zero grade may be issued, as well. Absences When a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get all class notes and work that was missed. Coursework can be found on Mr. Cowan’s webpage or the proper Google Drive folder. Acceptance of the coursework will follow the Life School Student Handbook policy. Conflict Resolution If there is a conflict, the student may discuss it with me before or after school. Class time will not be used to discuss the problem. The student should be calm and respectful when discussing the matter. If we have a discussion, it does not mean the offense will be taken away.
