SCH3U1 Combustion Reactions A combustion reaction involves the reaction of a substance with oxygen to produce heat and/or light. Combustion reactions are a type of simple oxidation reaction. Eg. C + O2 CO2 + energy CS2 + O2 CO2 + SO2 + energy A hydrocarbon is a substance that contains carbon and hydrogen. Methane (CH4) and octane (C8H16) are examples of hydrocarbons. When a hydrocarbon undergoes combustion, carbon dioxide and water are produced. Eg. CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O Other organic compounds (carbon, hydrogen with other elements) also undergo combustion. E.g. Ethyl Alcohol C2H5OH + O2 CO2 + H2O Complete Combustion of Hydrocarbons: occurs if enough oxygen is present hydrocarbon + oxygen carbon dioxide + water Incomplete Combustion of Hydrocarbons: occurs if less than enough oxygen is present hydrocarbon + oxygen carbon + carbon monoxide + carbon dioxide + water Some or all of these may be present. Amounts may vary. E.g. Incomplete Combustion of Propane : C3H8 + O2 C + CO + CO2 + H2O Chemical Reactions and Energy An energy term can be added to a reaction to a chemical equation to indicate whether energy is released or absorbed. Energy terms are not balanced. Exothermic reactions involve a release of energy (energy exits the reactants): A+ B e.g. CH4 C + D + energy + 2 O2 CO2 + 2 H2O + energy Endothermic reactions involve the absorption of energy (energy enters the products): A e.g. + B + energy 2 H2O + energy C + D 2 H2 + O2 SCH3U1 Combustion Exercise 1.
