Placement F2 General Surgery The department Busy general surgical unit in a district general hospital dealing with a wide range of elective and emergency surgical conditions As part of a surgical team will take a history, examine and initiate investigation of a wide range of elective and emergency patients. Manage and treat in-patients on the ward. Participate in the general surgical on call rota. Understand the issues surrounding consent. Observe the use of evidence based medicine and national and local guidelines to enhance quality of patient care. Participate in audit Chance to become skilled at taking history and giving information about care. Breaking bad news to patients and communicating effectively with relatives. Part of a multidisciplinary team. Learning to interface with medical colleagues from other specialties, Clinical Nurse Specialists, dietician, pharmacy and physiotherapy Protected time to attend the teaching programme. Attendance at MDT meetings and surgical educational sessions. Will be taught and supervised by the Consultant and specialty trainees. Opportunity to teach medical students attached to the team Resuscitation and management of surgical emergencies.
