Individual Placement Description

Placement
F2 General Surgery
The department
Busy general surgical unit in a district
general hospital dealing with a wide
range of elective and emergency
surgical conditions
 As part of a surgical team will take a
history, examine and initiate
investigation of a wide range of
elective and emergency patients.
Manage and treat in-patients on the
ward. Participate in the general
surgical on call rota.
 Understand the issues surrounding
consent. Observe the use of
evidence based medicine and
national and local guidelines to
enhance quality of patient care.
Participate in audit
 Chance to become skilled at taking
history and giving information about
care. Breaking bad news to patients
and communicating effectively with
relatives.
 Part of a multidisciplinary team.
Learning to interface with medical
colleagues from other specialties,
Clinical Nurse Specialists, dietician,
pharmacy and physiotherapy
 Protected time to attend the teaching
programme. Attendance at MDT
meetings and surgical educational
sessions.
 Will be taught and supervised by the
Consultant and specialty trainees.
 Opportunity to teach medical
students attached to the team
 Resuscitation and management of
surgical emergencies. Fluid balance,
prescribing, pain management and
treatment of acute surgical
catastrophes and complications of
surgery under supervision of
surgical team
