SCHOOL INFORMATION The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Instrumental Music is Education Queensland’s biennial scholarship program for up to 77 Musically Outstanding Students (MOST) from Queensland state high schools. This 12 residential program is designed to extend your gifted and talented instrumental students through a series of intensive rehearsals, workshops, tutorials and performances with professional conductors, instructors and tutors. MOST 2011 will be in Brisbane from Sunday 19 June - Friday 1 July 2011. 1. SHORT LISTING Students complete the student nomination form providing information about their current musical standard and their performance experience. Students will be short listed primarily on: a) their stated musical standard on their audition instrument/s b) their self-discipline and demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within the school context. Musical Standards Students will be expected to perform on their selected audition instrument/s to the following minimum standards: Clarinet Flute/piccolo Alto Saxophone Tenor Saxophone Trumpet Violin Bassoon Baritone saxophone Cello French Horn Oboe Double Bass (String Bass) Tuba Trombone Viola Percussion Level 5, Instrumental Music Curriculum (Approximately Grade 6–7 A.M.E.B.) Level 4, Instrumental Music Curriculum (Approximately Grade 5–6 A.M.E.B.) Percussionists should be proficient on both tuned and untuned percussion. A drum kit player with excellent reading ability may be selected. Drum Kit Please note: Special consideration may be given to less advanced oboe, bassoon, baritone saxophone, and string bass students depending upon the quality of nominations received. Consideration may also be given to students indicating jazz/big band doubling capability. 1 Behavioural Standards Students will be expected to: be self-disciplined and highly cooperative; accept direction from program staff; have sufficient stamina for day and night tuition and rehearsals over the entire program; and be committed to achieving the highest possible levels of musical development and performance. 2. AFTER THE SHORT LISTING Following the initial short listing of nominations, selected students will be offered the opportunity to audition for a MOST 2011 scholarship. All auditions must be submitted on DVD. These DVDs should be recorded at school or other suitable venue under the supervision of the school instrumental music teacher. Auditions will consist of: a performance of two prepared pieces or excerpts in different styles, lasting not longer than 10 minutes in total. a performance of a chromatic scale that demonstrates your full range e.g. high and low notes. 3. IF A STUDENT IS OFFERED A SCHOLARSHIP Tuition, travel and accommodation costs Education Queensland will meet the majority of costs of the MOST 2011 program. Education Queensland will meet the cost of travel from the student’s hometown to Brisbane (and return) except for students from Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane who will be expected to make their own travel arrangements. Parents/guardians will be asked to contribute $295 towards accommodation for students. Special arrangements may be made where financial hardship will prevent a selected student from participating. All requests for special arrangements due to financial difficulty need to be presented in writing and endorsed by the school Principal. All discussions will be held in confidence. 4. HOW TO NOMINATE All nominations must be completed online by the school’s MOST 2011 coordinator. a) MOST 2011 coordinator gives the student the student nomination form to complete and a parent letter for their parent/guardian. b) Student completes the nomination form and returns it to the MOST 2011 coordinator signed by the student and parent/guardian. c) MOST 2011 coordinator completes the MOST 2011 nomination form in OnePortal including student nomination information. 5. NOMINATION DEADLINES a) Nominations open Monday 7 February, 2011. b) Nominations must be submitted no later than Friday 4 March, 2011. Late nominations may not be accepted. 2
