NW Thames Foundation School Individual Placement Description Placement Medical Microbiology 4 months The department Medical Microbiology Trust & Site Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, based at St. Mary’s and occasionally at Charing Cross The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Reviewing patients with hospital or communityacquired infections and advising on best management. The placement provides excellent (consultant-led) training in the use of antibiotics and the management of complex infections. Clinical Supervisor(s) for placement Main duties of the placement the Dr. Annette Jepson Initial 2-week rotation in the main Microbiology laboratory to become acquainted with the basic tests. Subsequently based at St. Mary’s with the Registrars to learn how to authorize clinical results and how to handle telephone queries. Clinical care of patients is discussed with the microbiology team on a daily basis either on the ward round or by giving information over the telephone. The trainee will complete an audit project of similar project Acute medical skills are learnt in conjunction with time spent with the physicians on call. Typical working pattern in this Essentially the mornings are spent in the clinical placement office or doing ward rounds with the consultants. There are fixed MDTs (with ID) on Monday and Friday afternoons, with a paediatric ID meeting on Tuesday afternoons.
