NAPLAN
On 13, 14 and 15 May students across Queensland will take part in the national literacy and
numeracy tests. The tests will see all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sitting the same tests as
their interstate counterparts.
The test results will provide information about how all state and non-state school students are
performing in literacy and numeracy at their year level in comparison to their peers across
Australia.
The literacy assessment will focus on areas of reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and
grammar while the numeracy testing will cover measurement, chance and data, space, working
mathematically, algebra function and pattern.
Results from the tests will be used for reports to parents, school reporting to their communities,
and reporting by states and territories to form a national overview. The tests will also help
teachers identify key areas for learning during the rest of the school year.
Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for
consideration by parents in consultation with the Principal. If you wish to withdraw your child
from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please contact the school if you
wish to discuss this further.
Here are some simple things families can do to assist students with NAPLAN preparation-:
1. Getting plenty of rest in the lead up to the testing
2. Eating well balanced meals
3. Stay relaxed (Well try anyway)
Breakfast will be provided for students who are taking part in the tests on the mornings of
NAPLAN.

Staff Absences
Mrs Newton will be absent on Tuesday 20th May attending a Principal’s Forum
Mrs Newton, Mrs Ducci and Ms Kooyman will all be absent attending Professional
development on Friday 23rd May. We have endeavoured to utilise both familiar and competent
replacement teachers to ensure routine is continued for the students on this day.
Prep/1/2 News
Off to another flying start this term! The students have settled back into the routines again and
are very focussed on their tasks. In English the Preps are learning more sight vocabulary as
well as blending sounds they already know into lists of words. They were very surprised at how
many words they could make with their sounds. More cards will be sent home to add to the
other sound cards this week. They are excited that they can beat you in card games! It is such
a wonderful way of remembering the sounds. This week we have introduced the sounds P and
R. They enjoyed the P activity very much as they were able to eat popcorn while they
completed it. The Year 1 and 2 students are working on the blends - st, ch sh and th. As well
as doing phonic activities, they are writing words with these blends in their handwriting lesson
each day.
In Mathematics we are looking at location words leading into ordinal number for the Year 1s and
2s. The Preps are looking at long and short as well as continuing with our study of the numbers
1 – 10.
I hope everyone had a look at the school display at the show. It really did look beautiful. Our
senses unit concluded this week with the making of a senses mask. The students were very
attentive in all lessons and were eager to learn about themselves and how they use the senses
to keep themselves alive.
As the weather is getting cooler please ensure that your child has a jumper of some sort in their
bag and that there is name on it.
Until next newsletter, Ciao, Gail Ducci
3/4 News
Hello Everyone,
Well what a start to the term! It seems that the term has only just begun in reality now that the
weeks have stabilized.
On the 19th May our class will be a host to a pre-service teacher, Mrs Katherine Costello. Mrs
Costello is in her third year of university training and will be focusing on pedagogy and ICT
whilst in the classroom. The practicum goes for three weeks and requires Mrs Costello to teach
a certain amount of time each day working up to a full day during her third week. Feel free to
call in and meet Katherine during her time with us.
On the 23rd of May I will be away as I am travelling to Melbourne for a teacher’s conference. A
supply teacher, known to the students, will replace me for that day. I look forward to sharing my
interstate knowledge with you on my return.
The students are working on two separate assessment pieces at the moment. The science
piece requires the students to make a non-fiction book on an animal of their choice. The
requirements for this will be sent home to you shortly. For Geography/English the students are
using Windows Publisher to produce a travel/advertising brochure for a location within Australia.
These places were decided after reading the book “Are We There Yet?” by Alison Lester. Your
child will probably by asking you to access the internet and a printer as they search for the
necessary pictures to produce these items.
Please ensure that your child has a jumper (preferably school colours) in their bag each day.
The room is climate controlled due to our wonderful
reverse-cycled
air conditioners however the outside temperature can
sometimes be
very nasty. Several students have already suffered from
colds and flues.
Until next time 

5/6/7 News
A warm welcome back to parents for the term. We are off to a racing start with ANZAC Day and
the Marburg Show now behind us we are now focussing on our core learning for English and
Maths. Over the last 3 weeks students have started planning for their animated story
assessment- which basically means they will utilise their short story from the last unit and bring
it to life through their chosen medium. We have already looked at cartoons, animation,
stop/motion creations and video. They are very excited
and don’t be surprised if your assistance at home is
required at some point over the next few weeks. In
Maths we are investigating ratio, equivalent fractions
and decimal work, while revising previously taught
number concepts. Mrs Bryant is continuing with
Geometry and Mrs O’Sullivan continues with operation
work. Students in the year 5 and 7 cohort have spent
time preparing for NAPLAN through exposure to
different questioning in reading/ writing/language
conventions and some revision of both narrative and
persuasive texts. I ask that families reassure their child to try their best and have some early
nights just before NAPLAN. There is a timetable with some information in this newsletter for
each family to read. Homework for the term continues to be reading/ spelling/maths worksheet.
If at anytime you have any questions regarding your child please do not hesitate in contacting
me. Thank you.
We hope you all have a great couple of weeks
Until next time,
Mrs N.

P & C NEWS
What a busy fortnight! Thank you to all families who participated in the ANZAC Day ceremony.
The students looked smart marching in the parade and the school leaders performed their roles
with dignity and respect. All of Marburg is proud of you.
The Marburg Show was a great event and the P&C’s “Marburger’ stand was once again a
success making $3500 to help subsidise the education of all our students. Sales were down on
last year due to the weather and cancellation of the horse and ring events. A huge ‘thank you’
to all who helped on the stand, BBQ’d and baked delicious cakes and slices. An extra special
thank you to those families and friends from outside the school that helped. This show of
support was greatly appreciated. Well done all!
Congratulations to all students for your contribution of school work at the show. Well done to
those that collected fantastic prizes and to the school for their fabulous winning ‘Science’
display.
Thank you to all who bought tickets and congratulations to the winners of our 2014 Mother’s
Day Raffle drawn this morning. To the businesses who donated the fantastic prizes thank you
for your continued support. The results will be posted in the next newsletter.
The schools next major fundraiser is “Poets in the Park” on Saturday June 14. The P&C has
once again been asked to cater for Breakfast. Helpers are needed plus donations of fruit, eggs
and bacon and egg slice or quiche will be appreciated.
