FOCUS QUESTIONS FOR THE HOT ZONE

 How much information should the government
keep from citizens? When is it acceptable or
unacceptable to keep information from society?

 Keep a log of diseases from our unit of study
(AIDS, Marburg, Ebola, etc.). For each one,
critically analyze not only the power of the
disease but also the impact it has had on
society. This will be part of your culminating
research project.

Marburg
Marburg kills 1 out of 4 people that contract it. The
disease’s symptoms are powerful because it makes
the victim bleed out of every orifice, slowly liquefying
some organs, and this cannot be reversed. Because
the incubation period is about ten days, Marburg
can be a secret killer in those who have it. It took
scientists about ten years to finally discover the
virus and all it was capable of.
HOW MUCH INFORMATION SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT KEEP
FROM CITIZENS? WHEN IT IS ACCEPTABLE OR UNACCEPTABLE
TO KEEP INFORMATION FROM SOCIETY?

The government should keep
information from citizens if the
info is not verified or could be
false. It should be a real,
serious threat that is not up for
debate. At this point in The
Hot Zone, the scientists have
proof of the Ebola outbreak. It
is necessary to inform society
so that extreme precaution can
be taken and lives saved.
