Dear Parents and Carers,

Information for New Parents/Caregivers

Priorities for 2015

Our school priorities are as follows-:

Continued implementation of the Australian Curriculum

Improved student performance in Reading

Improved student performance in Numeracy

Strong Community Partnerships

Embed our whole school Pedagogical Framework in all that we do.

.

Assembly - Assembly occurs on a Friday morning at 9.00am in the school Hall. All parents and caregivers are welcome to attend. Weekly encouragement awards, reading at home awards and class awards are presented during assembly as well as announcements and occasionally special guests or presentations.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support and Superstars - For our students we promote a behavioural standard which congratulates consistent high quality behaviour and provides targeted processes for supporting students who have difficulties managing their own behaviour and meeting our high standards. This system is based on positive reinforcement for desired behaviours. Students work towards awards known as “Superstars ” for classroom and playground conduct related to our school-wide expectations. Information and updates regarding behaviour and wellbeing in our school is reported back to the parent community on a regular basis. An overview of the schools Responsible Behaviour Plan is in the Parent Handbook. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any queries regarding the rewards system.

Parent Handbook

Just a reminder that most general information regarding day to day operation of the school is located in the Parent Handbook.

PREP-1 News

Week 3!!

The Preps have certainly settled in well to school life and are working beautifully. They are putting everything into their work, as well as making sure that those around them are ok with any task I may set them. It is wonderful to watch. The Year

Ones are now aware that they will have to focus lots more on their tasks as work standards have been raised.

Next week the QT photographer is coming to take the Preps photo to be included in a Prep

Photo Special Edition that they run every year.

If you do not want your child to be in the photo please let me know. They will be here on

Wednesday, 18 th February at 8:45 !!!! Please make sure your Prep is here on time or he/she will miss out.

A few more details on the curriculum for this term. In Science the two grades work together. The topic is The Living World. In this unit the students identify that living things have basic needs, including food and water, and have a variety of external features. They look at how living things change as they grow and the different environments they live in.

In Geography , the Preps investigate the question - What are places like? The

Year Ones investigate the questions – What are the different features of places? How can we care for places? How can spaces within a place be rearranged to suit different purposes?

In History , the Preps investigate their own personal story and examine family structures while the Year Ones develop an understanding of terms indicating the passing of time which are frequently used in stories and conversations about the past and how these terms are used to describe dates and changes that have personal significance.

Oral presentations will begin next week for the Year Ones and the following week for the Preps.

A note was sent home explaining what is required.

Ciao, Gail Ducci

2-4 NEWS

Hello Everyone, well what a busy start to the year we have had.

The students are rapidly learning the procedures for the new classroom and are coping beautifully. Well done everyone!

Homework has already begun so, if you have not seen any as yet, please have a conversation with your child as to where it may be. Monday is the day we organise and issue homework. It is due on Friday and need not be returned to school each day. The major components to homework are maths, spelling and reading.

Please be sure to record all reading due in your child’s READIT book as these are monitored throughout the year. Children who have read for 200 nights across 2015 will receive their free book on presentation night in recognition of their outstanding effort.

In Geography we are learning about the significance of “place”, and why some places are special to certain people.

History sees us learning about the traditional owners of the land and how white Australians came to be here.

Science this term is all to do with the three states of matter- solid, liquid and gas.

In English we are looking at characters within stories and how authors use words to express emotions.

Maths is the only real subject where the students work at their specific grade level, due to the highly sequential nature of gaining mathematical concepts.

All work within the classroom is set at the appropriate level for the student completing the work.

This process is called differentiation and is practised throughout the entire school.

Thank you to those parents who attended the school’s Meet and Greet on Friday afternoon. It is always lovely to put faces to names and make contact with parents. Thank you also to those parents who have supplied earphones for their children as we are now using the computers for several activities within the room. Please be aware that the art/RI levy is now due. Payments can be made at the office.

Have a great safe weekend. Until next fortnight…

5-6 NEWS

It has been full steam ahead in our classroom over the last 2 weeks. There have been some changes in our classroom since

2014. Our spelling consists of the Australian Curriculum

Spelling Journals which link directly to our writing units- for the first term this is a combination of short story writing and persuasive argument. Students also participate in Robust vocabulary each week to challenge their word knowledge and usage in everyday writing.

The first few weeks of the year will be spent sorting out rotation groups for literacy and maths to gather information on what style of learning suits each individual and then match them accordingly to their needs.

Students will be responsible for collecting and recording their own data in regard to spelling, maths computation, reading and multiplication facts each day in Data Books. The purpose of this is so that students can see a starting point for some aspects of their learning and then map their progress as they improve and then set new goals.

Our focus for this term is being an Active Learner in a variety of situations. These include individual, small group and whole team. I am really impressed with the maturity and enthusiasm of the class as a whole and the first few weeks teaching and learning with them has been delightful.

A reminder that homework is given out each Monday and is to be returned each Friday. Please make sure to ask your child if there are any notes each day and feel free to contact me in regards to your child’s learning at any time.
