For this specific experiment, the dishwashing solution used contains sodium laurel sulfate, or SLS, that aids in the breakdown of fats and proteins of the banana. Once these membranes are broken apart, the DNA is then released from the inside of the banana cell. The purpose of the chilled alcohol, on the other side, is to let the solution precipitate. After that, the Banana DNA is finally isolated from the rest of its cell components.
