CLASS TITLE:
WRITING CENTER SPECIALIST
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Writing Center Faculty Director, supervise, coordinate,
organize and participate in a wide variety of specialized program and office duties;
provide work direction to and monitor performance of Writing Center consultants and
instructional aides; serve as primary contact with writing consultants and provide
direction and guidance to them; provide information to the college and public
concerning Writing Center services; maintain responsibility for the operations of the
Writing Center in the absence of the Faculty Director; provide specialized secretarial
support to operate the Center.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Develop and coordinate a system of matching faculty with writing consultants to provide
academic support based upon student needs; ensure fair distribution of work assignments;
process faculty recommendations; identify and monitor specified faculty requests. [E]
2. Develop, assess, evaluate, and analyze Writing Center activities that maintain and increase
district-wide retention goals. [E]
3. Assist in the preparation and delivery of presentations to faculty, campus units,
administration and the community; develop and present Student Success Workshops;
assist in creating and maintaining a writing-centered series of workshops.
4. Train, provide work direction/guidance and assess writing consultants and instructional
aides; develop ongoing in-service training to continuing writing consultants. [E]
5. Develop and maintain department and Faculty Director’s web pages.
6. Monitor delivery of academic support services at all district sites. Analyze, interpret, and
apply district and departmental policies and procedures related to the Writing Center.
Assist and support the development and maintenance of the Writing Center. Compose and
prepare a variety of correspondence relating to the Writing Center and for a variety of
audiences. Maintain consultant records; organize and process student and faculty
evaluations. Monitor department budget; process purchasing needs and requests. Assist in
collection of staff and student time logs for shared payroll with Tutoring and Academic
Support Center. [E]
7. Arrange writing consultant-related staffing processes; analyze records and applications of
writing consultants; determine staffing requirements; assist in the hiring process of writing
consultants and instructional aides. [E]

8. Assist in resolving intra-staff conflict; monitor and meet program goals and expectations
related to faculty, staff, and students; ensure student confidentiality.
9. Compile and review data for research projects and reports related to district retention
efforts, service usage, consultant performance, student progress, and budget trends;
prepare and maintain records and reports; provide statistical information. [E]
10. Schedule travel arrangements; file reports of travel and reimbursement requests; handle
periodic event planning; operate District vehicles as required.
11. Provide feedback to student writers, including scholarship and college applications.
12. Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree in area of specialty and one year closely related work

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional Aides, temporary and student workers.
CONTACTS:
Students, faculty, staff, various departments, external education institutions, and the public;
special responsibility for relations with Community Learning Center site.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light
lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to travel to locations on and off
campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions
and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or
groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to
concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time, and to work effectively under
pressure with minimal direction or supervision on a multiplicity of duties and responsibilities
concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily busy, indoor office environment; subject to frequent employee to constant student
contact and interruptions by phone and in person; intermittent exposure to angry and/or verbally
aggressive individuals; may be required to work during day and/or evening hours on an asneeded basis; may work at any college location. Occasional local travel may be requested.
