College Leadership Team
November 4, 2015
Present – Rick Chant, Jeff Cornett, Jennifer Kane, John Kemppainen, Cathy O’Farrell, Matthew Ohlson,
Megan Possinger, Linda Sciarratta; John Venn, Guest: John White
Call to order – The meeting was called to order at 9:35 a.m.
Approval of Minutes – The minutes were approved as written.
Announcements
FTCE Test Prep Sessions
Dr. O’Farrell completed the first science session which was very well received. Dr. O’Farrell will have a
second math session on Friday, November 6. Dr. Possinger completed one GK session and will have a
second session on Friday, Nov 6. Dr. O’Farrell and Dr. Possinger feel future sessions should focus on
specific content topics. Dr. Possinger discussed the benefits for faculty to take the various FTCE exams to
better prepare their students who need help in passing the exams.
Dr. Kemppainen collaborated with FSCJ advisors, giving them the information on how students can sign up
for our COEHS FTCE workshops.
Dr. O’Farrell reported on a meeting at the Duval County School Board. The interns talked about project
breakthrough and the professional development school partnerships. Dr. Syverud and our interns
represented COEHS well.
Dr. Kemppainen was in Tallahassee at “Day on the Hill” and was represented by one of our students and
one of our alums from Woodland Acres. The legislature seemed responsive to the need for increasing
funding for scholarships.
Driver Training (JPK)
FDOE is referring students to COEHS for driver education training; have Dr. Eastham remove it from the
COEHS website. Driver Education is not offered in the COEHS.
Dr. Possinger gave a “Report to the State” update.
Review of prerequisite courses for teacher education (JPK) (Handout provided)
Have a small committee from each area who shepherd these pre-requisite courses. Include Dr. O’Farrell to
discuss increasing the number of observation hours in the intro course. Dr. Kemppainen would like this by
the end of the semester. Dr. Cornett will present this to FSE faculty and provide feedback to Dr.
Kemppainen.
Faculty Support Grant (JJK)
The faculty support grants will be awarded on November 20. Dr. Kane asked department chairs to please
submit the proposals that were submitted with the rating rubric by November 15.
Looking forward – Dr. Cornett suggested that the proposals should be reviewed by a faculty committee.
Dr. Kane will look into that process for next year.
Student Conference Support Update (JJK)
$2,800 have been awarded to students for conference support. There is a balance of $7,200 remaining –
this is a great incentive to involve your students in research and research presentations.
Search Updates (JJK)
The leadership team gave updates on COEHS faculty, department chair and dean’s searches.
Ideas for Donors (JJK)
Departments please brainstorm ideas during your faculty meetings for Nicole Pece to bring to the DEAC
committee. Dr. Kemppainen shared his thoughts of bringing student scholarships to the Teacher Academy.
Science and Math Education Initiatives (JJK)
Dr. Lupi would like to put forth efforts that would increase Science and Math Education. Dr. Lupi and Dr.
Kane would like to plan a series of conversations with key people to target some type of cohort be an
incentive to STEM. There are funds and grants available for these types of initiatives. Scheduling a future
meeting is in progress to discuss these ideas.
Dr. Kemppainen will inquire some dates to meet with ACE regarding advising students for P.E. Dr. Cornett
and Dr. Chant will also be included in the future meeting with ACE.
FTE projections FY 2016-17 (JJK)
Dr. Kane led a discussion concerning FTE projections and enrollment targets. Concerns were also raised
why spring 2016 graduate I projections were higher than 2015. Dr. Kane will address this rationale with
Dr. Colom. Dr. Cornett would like to look further in to summer matriculation numbers.
Report to AA (Three Top “National Recognition” Achievements 2014-2015 academic year)

New Business
Dr. Ohlson a new doctoral student mentoring program between experienced cohort members and our
incoming jubilee group. Best Practices will be shared, and strategies to increase retention and
collaboration. The mentoring program will also include doctoral students presenting with faculty at
professional conferences.
Department Guidelines (JW)
The new guidelines are used as measuring tools to evaluate promotion and tenure criteria. Department
guidelines will serve as a notice to external reviewers what the standards are. Dr. White will share his
power point with department chairs and faculty.
