College Leadership Team October 21, 2015 Present –Jeff Cornett, Chris Janson, Jennifer Kane, John Kemppainen, Marsha Lupi, Cathy O’Farrell, Karen Patterson, Megan Possinger, Linda Sciarratta; John Venn Call to order – The meeting was called to order at 9:35 a.m. Approval of Minutes – The minutes were approved as written. Announcements Dr. Lupi shared her recent meeting at JPEF regarding school grading and school re-districting boundary changes. Dr. Kemppainen shared that the recent Belizean visit to COEHS was very successful. The University of Belize has appropriated monies to send three more people for a session in understanding the concept and ideas of professional development schools. Dr. Kemppainen and Dr. Syverud will be taking seven students abroad during November. Two of the students are school counseling majors; while in Belize they will host a one-day workshop for school counselors at the University of Belize. Thirteen students will be traveling to Plymouth in March 2016. Four sport management, six primary ed., and three secondary ed. majors. Dr. Janson will meet with the Franklin Institute at the University of Alcalá. The Franklin Institute is in support of COEHS students when they are travelling abroad to their university. The Franklin Institute will provide a stipend for student teachers. Drs. Janson and Ohlson are in the process of following up with the institute as a possible two-week residential component for the new online Ed.D program LSCSM is developing. Dr. Kemppainen has a subscription for the Swivel Cloud and plans to utilize the cloud during the November study abroad to Belize. Dr. Eastham will be traveling to Belize also to provide tech support for the cloud which Dr. O’Farrell and her supervisors of student teachers to be able to watch live from Belize. June 3, 2016 will be the Silver Jubilee Gala for the doctoral program. The theme will be twenty-five for twenty-five. Those who contribute $25.00 will receive a tee-shirt and other various items. More to come on the Silver Jubilee event. FACTE overview Drs. Lupi, Kane, Kemppainen, and Possinger shared an overview of their recent FACTE conference. Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA) Call for Workshop Proposals (MHL) The Dean’s office was contacted by Abbey Stewart, FFEA, to inquire if COEHS would like to promote the college at their next conference in January, 2016. COEHS will have a full page ad and a table at the conference. Dr. Colom, Enrollment Services will be providing support of the advertisement and conference table. State Reporting, and reporting requirements (MSP) and FTCE Workshop progress Dr. Possinger distributed a handout (Information needed for FLDOE Report). The state is requiring us to report on the FTCE; Dr. Possinger included in the COEHS report the FTCE workshops the college is hosting to prepare students for the FTCE exams.. Duval County will deliver a three day training “utilizing the assessment tools” to COEHS supervising faculty. Duval County will also deliver a two or three hour training to our interns. Dr. O’Farrell and the resident clinical faculty will meet with the Duval county folks on Thursday, October 22nd for discussion. Department Chairs can submit to Dr. Possinger a two or three paragraph synopsis of what departments are doing, or have done. Recency pertains to whether the supervisors of students have recently taught subjects in the student’s field of study, grade etc. The supervisor should be able to demonstrate once through the course of a year that they have worked with children. Megan will send out the specifications of what recency means. Continued Education – MHL Dr. Abdullah, Interim Dean Continuing Education, met with Dr. Lupi and Dr. Kane to inquire ways continuing education can partner with COEHS. For example - FTCE Workshops, New Math for parents and grandparents, ASL for folks not taking classes in the program. Please think about topics of interest for discussion including ways to impact/increase our enrollment numbers without losing numbers/enrollment. FTCE Workshop progress- JJK Kelly Scott had 25 students at Monday’s FTCE social studies workshop. The feedback was great on the exit survey. An Edmodo account will be available to provide support to the students. The next workshop, Language Arts, will be on Friday the 23rd. Dr. Possinger will be doing GK review sessions starting next week. Dr. Lupi met with Laura Boilini, Dean, Arts and Science from St. Johns River College. In an effort to increase secondary education teachers, Dr. Lupi would like to have secondary education faculty go out to colleges to make students aware of the options of becoming teachers of math and sciences. Florida Education Common Prerequisites Steering Committee meeting as it relates to the three lower level Education Common Prerequisites (JPK) RE: Dr. Kemppainen’s meeting in Tallahassee. Dr. Kemppainen passed out a handout to the leadership team listing the SUS committee members and SUS colleges. The handout, Dr. Kemppainen also used for his discussion of the meeting in Tallahassee. All three lower level prerequisites competencies need to be reviewed and modified to reflect current practice. Dr. Kemppainen suggested a small faculty committee – Dr. Kemppainen will work with Dr. Cornett to get together a committee. Several conference calls will be conducted between now and January when the next meeting will be in Tallahassee. Dr. Kemppainen, Dr. Kane, and Dr. Cornett will work together to discuss revisions to be included in the courses. Dr. Kane’s meetings with faculty led to the conclusion that a conceptual framework is needed before any major revisions are made to these courses. Department Guidelines (Chairs Only) (MHL) Department Chairs must make decisions on foundation monies used for COEHS functions. Please advise your staff to address their foundation account concerns to their department chair only. Please get your department guidelines in by January so they can be processed and approved.
