EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes August 4, 2009 Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Espie Corrado, LauraLee Garinger, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 10:00 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21. Review of Minutes from May 11, 2009 meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: 1) Working on year-end report for the CACT. 2) Working with the California Space Authority on two reports: To document how El Camino implemented the largest Project Lead the Way program on the West coast. How to create an aerospace manufacturing coalition for the South Bay. 3) Funds for Project Lead the Way CTE have been disbursed ($500,000 for a performance period February 2009-August 2010). 4) The new SB747 program has been launched. This program will recruit 40 atrisk high school students to participate in a 2-year Machine Tool Technician program at Compton and El Camino. Pacific Gateway will be one of the main partners in recruiting the participants. o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: 1) Currently working on year-end reports for: CITD, ITCI, and YEP. 2) Continue to work on the ITCI website. Currently working on the Frequently Asked Questions section. 3) Continue to work on Best Market reports; the interns have finished their drafts and now the reports are being edited. 4) On-going coordination for the October Extreme Entrepreneur Tour. o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: 1) Star Van Buren will be attending the mandatory ASBDC Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida September 14-17th. 2) The Long Beach Lead Center set up a new website to be used by all the centers under their regional network to post all workshops and events. Each center will be responsible for updating their activities. The website is www.southbaysbdc.org. 3) An internal audit will take place in August or September. o Workforce Education – Espie Corrado: The El Camino Language Academy (ECLA) has been moved to Admissions & Records effective July 1, 2009. Career Placement Services 1) Improved Procedure for CPS Internships: Beginning in August, CPS will introduce an improved procedure for students and faculty to get information on internships. The new procedure simply adds internships as a category to 1 the CPS job bulletin board so that anyone, students or faculty, accessing the job bulletin board from any computer on campus can find a link to details on any internship listed. The new feature will also show faculty, step-by-step, how to obtain details on an internship related to their teaching area and permit them to print the information so that it can be shared with students quickly and efficiently. Career and Technical Education 2) Received posters showing women in Industry and Technology. Also received new brochures for Welding, Electronics and HVAC. Preparing final reports for CTEA and Tech Prep for 2008-09. Sent out award announcements for CTEA 2009-10 to departments being funded. Women in Industry & Technology 3) The program has gone dormant at both El Camino College and Compton Education Center due to lack of funding. Josefina Bedolla and Alicia Zambrano are currently working on other projects. o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital: Employee Training Panel (ETP) Completing modification to current ETP contract to better meet training needs. Training in progress and interest for upcoming training is increasing. New companies are scheduling training. Contract Education 1) City of Redondo Beach’s Customer Service Academy training has completed. 2) City of Torrance’s first Customer Service Academy training has completed. Fall training schedule has been provided. 3) Customer Service training for a non-profit organization has been completed. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: Prisons 1) Blueprint Reading class and Wheelchair Repair class started in July. 2) Parenting class is scheduled for October. 3) Mock Job Fair will be held September 23rd. During August and September, classes in critiquing resumes, working on interview skills and holding mock interviews will be conducted. Maritime 1) STCW-95 class scheduled for August 18th is full. 2) Lifeboat class scheduled for August 25th is open for enrollment. Detention Center 1) Second Parenting class started July 6th. Computer Lab Individuals are being referred by the WorkSource Center and South Bay Center for Counseling. SBCC contract for this year will be submitted soon. Discussion o State Budget: Budget approved. Don’t know if cuts will be 32% or higher. Looking at stimulus money but it may not be as much as first thought. Projections are that next year will be just as bad. A lot of stimulus funds and grants are out there and we will continue to go after them. 2 o ACT!: Anyone receiving a computer upgrade will need to have ACT! installed on their new computer. o Purchasing has asked that all contracts be printed back-to-back in the future.
