Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in top making or semiworsted carding. People credited with this unit are able to:
explain the operation and function of the card components; and
set-up a semi-worsted or worsted card for safe and efficient
manufacture of sliver that meets specification.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of carding machine set-up.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Carding actions are described in terms of the way fibres are processed.

Types of card clothing used in workplace are identified and described in terms
of their features and function.

Fettling is described in terms of reasons for fettling and methods used.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Adjustments are made to card according to plant operating procedures and
plant safety procedures.
2.2
Card settings are made to enable processing of fibre to required specification
according to work instructions.

Run semi-worsted or worsted card to optimise machine settings.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Machine is operated according to plant safety procedures.

Samples for testing are taken according to operating procedure.
3.4
Machine is adjusted in response to test result analysis according to workplace
practice.
