Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of carding theory and practice; apply knowledge of
carding theory and practice to configure and set up a semiworsted card using hand held gauges, and configure and set
up a semi-worsted drafting zone and coiler.

Competence will be demonstrated on the carding process and products in the
candidate’s workplace.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Carding principles are explained and the impact on carding performance
described.
Range
1.2
carding power, delay factor, worker loadings.
Card roller speeds, directions and setting methods are described and the
impact of roller settings on carding performance is explained.

Drafting and coiler configuration and setting is described and the impact of
configuration on performance explained.
Outcome 2
Apply knowledge of carding theory and practice to configure and set up a semi-worsted
card using hand held gauges in accordance with workplace procedures.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Safety procedures are followed and the machine is isolated.
2.2
Gauged settings are within accepted tolerances.
2.3
Reasons are given for choice of configuration and individual roller settings.
2.4
Settings are documented.
Outcome 3
Apply knowledge of carding theory and practice to configure and set up a semi-worsted
drafting zone and coiler in accordance with workplace procedures.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
