Purpose
People credited with this unit standard, in the context of an
early childhood education (ECE) service, are able to: describe
learning resources appropriate for Pasifika children and how to
access them; develop resources for a learning programme for
Pasifika children; and use the developed resources in an ECE
service and evaluate their contribution to Pasifika children’s
learning.

Explanatory notes
1
This unit standard is intended for those who are student teachers, trainee managers,
or supervisors of Pasifika children in an ECE service.

People seeking credit for this unit standard will be required to show that their
demonstration of the evidence requirements arises from teaching and/or practicum
experience in an ECE service, through observing and implementing current ECE
curriculum legislative requirements.

Definitions
An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service,
hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be
nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the
educator.
Learning resources may include human, audio, visual, or written. These will be
readily available, cost effective, and consistent with children’s culture.
Pasifika children are pre-school members of Pasifika communities in New Zealand,
and may include but are not limited to: Cook Islands Māori, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan,
Tokelauan, Tongan, Tuvaluan.

Three 'broad age groups' are defined in Te Whāriki for children. These are
overlapping age categories and are defined as:
infant – birth to 18 months;
toddler – one year to three years;
young child – two and a half years to school entry age.

Evidence requirements

Learning resources are identified and described in terms of their value to the
learning and development of Pasifika children.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Resources are planned and developed appropriate to the children in an
established learning programme for Pasifika children.
2.2
The developed resources meet health and safety requirements.
Outcome 3
Use the developed resources in an ECE service and evaluate their contribution to Pasifika
children’s learning.
Range
at least three resources – one suitable for use with infants, one suitable for use
with toddlers and one suitable for use with young children.
Evidence requirements
3.1
The developed resources are used with the age group for which they are
intended.
3.2
Evaluation of resources includes observation of their use to establish whether
they stimulate language, challenge, choice, and decision-making by Pasifika
children.
3.3
Evaluation includes feedback from Pasifika children, their families and staff of
the ECE service about how resources extended Pasifika children’s learning.
3.4
Evaluation includes reflection on the planning, development and utilisation of
the resources.
3.5
Evaluation includes identification of possible improvements in the developed
resources or in their utilisation, and suggestions for further associated
resources that contribute to ongoing learning.
