Purpose
People credited with this unit standard, in the context of an
early childhood education (ECE) service, are able to: analyse
educational research relevant to Pasifika children’s learning;
test the findings/theories of research by applying them in
activity/ies involving Pasifika children and recording
observations; and evaluate and reflect on the application of the
research into practice for Pasifika children’s learning.

Explanatory notes
1
This unit standard is intended for those who are student teachers, trainee managers,
or supervisors of Pasifika children in ECE services.

People seeking credit for this unit standard will be required to show that their
demonstration of the evidence requirements arises from teaching and/or practicum
experience in an ECE service, through observing and implementing Te Whāriki and
current legislative requirements for curriculum.

The researchers selected must be relevant to early childhood education in New
Zealand.
Examples of Pasifika educational researchers include but are not limited to – Ana
Koloto, Diane Mara, Jean Mitaera, Konai Thaman.
Examples of Aotearoa/New Zealand researchers include but are not limited to –
Margaret Carr, David Fergusson, Stuart McNaughton, Anne Meade, Professor Richie
Poulton, Anne Smith.
Examples of Māori educational researchers include but are not limited to – Arohia
Durie, Mason Durie, Donna Awatere Huata, Rose Pere, Tamati M. Reedy, Linda
Smith, Arapera Royal Tangaere, Ranginui Walker.

Definitions
An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service,
hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be
nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the
educator.

Three 'broad age groups' are defined in Te Whāriki for children. These are
overlapping age categories and are defined as:
infant – birth to 18 months;
toddler – one year to three years;
young child – two and a half years to school entry age.
Pasifika children are pre-school members of Pasifika communities in New Zealand,
and may include but are not limited to: Cook Islands Māori, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan,
Tokelauan, Tongan, Tuvaluan.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Analyse educational research relevant to Pasifika children’s learning in an ECE service.
Range
evidence includes but is not limited to – one Pasifika researcher, one
Aotearoa/New Zealand researcher, one Māori researcher, one international
researcher.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Analysis summarises and critiques at least one significant educational aspect
that underpins the research of each researcher.
1.2
Analysis identifies key educational concepts within each piece of research.
1.3
Analysis discusses the relevance of each piece of research to an ECE service
with regard to the education and learning of Pasifika children.
Outcome 2
Test the findings/theories of research by applying them in activity/ies involving Pasifika
children and recording observations in an ECE service.
Range
evidence includes but is not limited to – one Pasifika researcher, one
Aotearoa/New Zealand researcher, one Māori researcher, one international
researcher.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Links between the planned activities and educational research for the learning
and development of Pasifika children are discussed.
2.2
Observations of Pasifika children’s involvement in the activities are recorded
and the observations are analysed in relation to the research.

Outcome 3
Evaluate and reflect on the application of the research into practice for Pasifika children’s
learning in an ECE service.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Evaluation determines the educational value of each applied piece of research
for Pasifika children.
3.2
The pieces of research are reflected on in terms of their implementation in
activities that reflect the cultural context of an ECE service.
3.3
Evaluation includes recommendations for future identification, planning and
implementation of educational research in activities that promote the learning
and education of Pasifika children in an ECE service.
