NZQA registered unit standard 26696 version 3 Page 1 of 4 Title Demonstrate knowledge of inclusive education for Pasifika children in an ECE service Level 6 Credits 10 Purpose People credited with this unit standard, in the context of an early childhood education (ECE) service, are able to: discuss current thinking around inclusive education for Pasifika children; identify and discuss the roles of agencies in supporting inclusive education for Pasifika children with special learning needs; and critique and reflect on current inclusive education policies and procedures and their relevance for Pasifika children with special learning needs. Classification Pacific Islands Early Childhood Education > Pacific Early Childhood Education: Curriculum Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard is intended for those who are student teachers, trainee managers, or supervisors of Pasifika children in ECE services. 2 An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service, hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the educator. Evidence of one type of service is required in this unit standard. 3 Educator may be persons and groups including teachers, supervisors, co-ordinators, whānau/families, and nannies who are involved in the learning and development of children. Evidence for one type of educator is required in this unit standard. 4 The philosophy of inclusion provides the opportunity for young children with special needs to attend an early childhood service they would attend if they did not have a disability. 5 People seeking credit for this unit standard will be required to show that their demonstration of the evidence requirements arises from teaching and/or practicum experience in an ECE service, through observing and implementing Te Whāriki and current legislative requirements relating to curriculum. These are overlapping age categories and are defined as: infant – birth to 18 months; toddler – one year to three years; young child – two and a half years to school entry age. Pasifika children are pre-school members of Pasifika communities in New Zealand, and may include but are not limited to – Cook Islands Māori, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan, Tokelauan, Tongan, Tuvaluan. Pasifika families and communities in this standard refers to aiga potopoto, fanau, kaiga, kainga, kopu tangata, magafaoa, mataqali and includes Pasifika parents, families, and other community groups and/or persons associated with ECE services. Range evidence of at least one category or a group from any category, or across the categories is required in this standard. Evidence requirements 1.1 Inclusive education within an ECE context is defined. 1.2 Philosophy of inclusive education is discussed in terms of ECE pedagogy. 1.3 Discussion summarises key policy and guideline statements in Te Whāriki in relation to inclusive education. 1.4 Discussion includes an understanding of Pasifika cultural beliefs and values regarding inclusive education for Pasifika children. Outcome 2 Identify and discuss the roles of agencies in supporting inclusive education for Pasifika children with special learning needs in an ECE context. Evidence requirements 2.1 Agencies that support inclusive education are identified and their roles are discussed in terms of children with special learning needs and their families. 2.2 The ways in which these agencies meet the needs of Pasifika children with special learning needs and their families are discussed. Outcome 3 Critique and reflect on current inclusive education policies and procedures and their relevance for Pasifika children with special learning needs in an ECE service. Range evidence of an individual child, one category or a group from any category, or across the categories is required in this standard. Evidence requirements 3.1 Policies and procedures for inclusive education are critiqued in terms of relevance for Pasifika children with special learning needs and their families. 3.2 Policies and procedures for inclusive education are reflected on in terms of their relevance for Pasifika children with special learning needs and their families.
