Classification Pacific Islands Early Childhood Education > Pacific Early Childhood Education: Family Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard is intended for those who are trainee managers or supervisors of Pasifika in ECE services. 2 An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service, hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the educator. Evidence of one type of service is required in this unit standard. 3 Educator may be persons and groups including teachers, supervisors, co-ordinators, whānau/families, and nannies who are involved in the learning and development of children. Evidence for one type of educator is required in this unit standard. 4 Interaction must be for an ECE service attended by Pasifika children. Interaction with Pasifika families and communities must accord with the curriculum principle of partnership with parents and whānau set out in Te Whāriki and current legislative requirements relating to curriculum. 5 People seeking credit for this unit standard will be required to show that their demonstration of the evidence requirements arises from teaching and/or practicum experience in an ECE service, through observing and implementing Te Whāriki and current legislative requirements relating to curriculum. These are overlapping age categories and are defined as: infant – birth to 18 months; toddler – one year to three years; young child – two and a half years to school entry age. Pasifika children are pre-school members of Pasifika communities in New Zealand, and may include but are not limited to – Cook Islands Māori, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan, Tokelauan, Tongan, Tuvaluan. Pasifika families and communities in this standard may include aiga potopoto, fanau, kaiga, kainga, kopu tangata, magafaoa, mataqali and Pasifika parents, families, and other community groups and/or persons associated with ECE services. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Plan activities that promote positive interactions between Pasifika people and an ECE service. Evidence requirements 1.1 The families and communities of Pasifika people involved with an ECE service are identified. Range may include but is not limited to – children, management and educators, families, church ministers, other associate Pasifika community representatives and leaders. Range 1.3 18798 version 4 Page 3 of 4 situations may include but are not limited to – ECE service meetings about curriculum, parents’ day, field trips, staff/community social gatherings, cultural activities; evidence of at least two situations and four interaction activities is required. Plan describes the purpose of each interaction activity. Outcome 2 Facilitate planned activities to promote positive interactions between Pasifika people and an ECE service. Range evidence of facilitation of the four planned interaction activities is required. Evidence requirements 2.1 The planned activities demonstrate the principle of working in partnership with parents and family for positive benefits in the ECE service, as set out in Te Whāriki and current legislative requirements relating to the curriculum. 2.2 The planned activities are facilitated in ways that promote the building of positive relationships with Pasifika families and communities. Range 2.3 may include but is not limited to – making others feel welcome, encouraging sense of belonging, acknowledgement of families’ beliefs and cultural practices, participation in activities and decision-making. Facilitation includes the use of appropriate protocols and effective oral and written communication with Pasifika people using English and at least one Pasifika language. Outcome 3 Evaluate the facilitation of planned activities to promote positive interactions between Pasifika people and an ECE service. Evidence requirements 3.1 Evaluation reflects on the appropriateness of the planned activities and their facilitation in relation to the situation. 3.2 Evaluation reflects on the success of the planned activities in relation to the quantity and quality of the interaction with Pasifika families and communities.
