Explanatory notes

1 This unit standard is intended for those who are trainee managers or supervisors of

Pasifika children in ECE services.

2 An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service, hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the educator.

Evidence of one type of service is required in this unit standard.

3 People seeking credit for this unit standard will be required to show that their demonstration of the evidence requirements arises from teaching and/or practicum experience in an ECE service, through observing and implementing Te Whāriki and current legislative requirements relating to curriculum.

4 Definitions

Networking may include connecting with government agencies, Pasifika agencies,

Pasifika communities and people, and exchanging information and ideas.

Pasifika families and communities in this unit standard may include aiga potopoto, fanau, kaiga, kainga, kopu tangata, magafaoa, mataqali and includes Pasifika parents, families, and other community groups and/or persons associated with ECE services.

1.1 The importance of networking for ECE services is described in terms of Te

Whāriki and curriculum regulatory requirements.

1.2 Key government agencies are described in terms of their roles and assistance available to an ECE service.

Range key government agencies include but are not limited to –

Education Review Office, Ministry of Education, Group Special

Education, Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs.

1.3 The importance and purpose of networking with Pasifika communities and government agencies is described.

Outcome 2

Establish Pasifika networks for an ECE service.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Networking opportunities are established with government agencies and

Pasifika communities.

Range establishing a network includes but is not limited to

– identifying key contacts in government agencies; identifying and communicating with key Pasifika community leaders and community agencies; following appropriate protocol and procedures; evidence of two government agencies and two Pasifika communities is required.

2.2 Networks are established with Pasifika families in a Pasifika community.

Range evidence of networks established with three Pasifika families involved with an ECE service is required.

Outcome 3

Evaluate the benefits and effectiveness of the established networks to the ECE service.

Range networks include but are not limited to

– government agencies, Pasifika communities, Pasifika families.

Evidence requirements

3.1 The benefits of the networks are described and evaluated in terms of assistance provided to an ECE service.

3.2 The effectiveness of the networks is evaluated in terms of communication and interaction with the ECE service.
