People credited with this unit standard are able to: determine
work required for card maintenance; produce a plan for the card
maintenance and consult with parties affected by the planned
activity; produce work instructions for card maintenance;
implement the maintenance plan; and review the maintenance
plan and make modifications.

1
Performance of the elements of this unit standard must comply with the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Company procedures refer to the documented methods for performing work activities
and include health and safety, operational, environmental, and quality management
requirements. They may be manuals, manufacturer’s specifications, or policy
statements.

This unit standard is intended to cover the planned annual maintenance of a carding
machine. It is not intended to cover minor preventative maintenance activities or
minor repairs.

Competence can be demonstrated on a woollen, semi-worsted, or worsted carding
machine.

Determine work required for card maintenance.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Planned work meets card and company maintenance requirements.
1.2
Special requirements applicable to the card, process, and/or company are
identified and added to the work requirements in accordance with company
procedures.

or component inspection, timed replacement or rebuild.
Outcome 2
Produce a plan for the card maintenance and consult with parties affected by the planned
activity.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Maintenance task requirements are determined in terms of resources, task
sequence, and time to complete.
2.2
Resource constraints are established in terms of quantity and availability.
2.3
Parties affected by the planned maintenance activity are identified and consulted.
Range
must include – production personnel, engineering and support
workshops, part suppliers;
may include – technical services personnel, quality control
personnel, customers and/or others depending on nature of the
maintenance.
2.4
Consultation with affected parties obtains the information needed to develop the
maintenance plan.
2.5
Tasks are sequenced to achieve required completion time.
2.6
Maintenance activity completion time meets requirements of the company.
2.7
Final approval and/or agreement for the maintenance plan are obtained from
affected parties in accordance with company procedures.
2.8
Maintenance plan is produced and published in accordance with company
procedures.

Implement the maintenance plan.
Evidence requirements
4.1
People involved in the maintenance are briefed and the plan and documentation
explained.
4.2
Maintenance progress is documented and recorded against the plan.
4.3
Activities within the plan are signed off when completed.
4.4
Delays and hold ups are managed appropriately to minimise deviation from plan.
4.5
Card returned to operational status on completion of maintenance.

Review the maintenance plan and make modifications.
Evidence requirements
5.1
Maintenance activity is reviewed after use to identify changes and modifications.
5.2
People involved in the maintenance activity are consulted for feedback.
5.3
Plan is modified and documented for future use.
