Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to, in a dairy
industry laboratory: access laboratory application software; use
software for specified purposes; produce reports of retrieved
data and/or processed data; and apply data protection
measures.

Explanatory notes

Performance must be demonstrated and assessed in accordance with organisational
requirements.

Organisational requirements refers to instructions to staff on policy and procedures
(including the application of legislation to work site situations) which are formally
documented or generally accepted at the work site. This may include legislation;
industry standards and methods; national and international standards and methods;
standards and methods published in internationally recognised reputable texts;
customer/organisation developed methods, standard operating procedures,
specifications, manuals, and manufacturer’s information.

The legislation and standards relevant to this unit standard may include but are not
limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Software packages could include – spreadsheets, databases, graphical and
statistical analysis and laboratory information systems.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Software is identified in terms of its application and use within the laboratory.
1.2
Software is opened from a personal computer or network terminal.
Outcome 2
Use software for specified purposes.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The appropriate level of given data is entered into the database.
2.2
Searches are conducted for the retrieval of required data.
2.3
Application features for efficient computation are used.
2.4
Data sets and databases are constructed for numerical and graphical analyses.
Outcome 3
Produce reports of retrieved data and/or processed data.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Data is analysed using features of the software package.
3.2
Options for constructing data reports are selected.
3.3
Results of data analyses are printed using features of the software package.
Outcome 4
Apply data protection measures.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Back up of worked data is maintained.
4.2
Hardcopy is maintained according to organisation requirements.
4.3
Antivirus software and quarantine procedures are used for important discs.
