This may include legislation; industry standards and methods; national and international standards and methods; standards and methods published in internationally recognised reputable texts; customer/organisation developed methods, standard operating procedures, specifications, manuals, and manufacturer’s information. 3 The legislation and standards relevant to this unit standard may include but are not limited to – AS/NZS 2243.1 (2005) Safety in Laboratories – Planning and operational aspects; Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations 1992; Fire Service Act 1975; Building Act 2004, Radiation Protection Act 1965, Resource Management Act 1991, codes of practice, and regulations. 4 Sources which may be referred to include but are not limited to: Codes of Practice and Guidelines approved by ERMA and recommended as a means of compliance with the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996; chemical supply company data bases and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS); publications of the National Poisons Centre (University of Otago, Dunedin), Laboratory Safety publication at http://www.acc.co.nz. Evidence requirements 1.1 Procedures defining health and safety practices are identified. 1.2 Safe handling techniques, storage, clean up and disposal are demonstrated. 1.3 Personal protective equipment is identified, worn and used. 1.4 First aid facilities are outlined and first aid personnel identified. 1.5 Procedures for managing, reporting and documenting incidents and/or accidents related to health and safety are identified. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of hazards in a dairy industry laboratory. Range categories of hazards may include but are not limited to: chemical, electrical, physical, environmental, biological; evidence is required for a minimum of four hazards to come from at least two categories. Evidence requirements 2.1 Hazards are described in terms of their nature and potential to cause adverse effects to personnel, equipment, property, and/or the environment. 2.2 Hazard information is identified and interpreted. Range 2.3 may include but is not limited to – container labelling, material safety data sheets, reference documents, signage. Hazards are explained in terms of security, compatibility and nature of storage facility. Outcome 3 Outline emergency procedures applicable to dairy industry laboratories. Evidence requirements 3.1 Emergency response procedures are outlined.
