Second Grade
Reading
Students will be asking and
answering questions about
key details in literary texts.
They will be working on
identifying story elements.
Students will also use their
knowledge of the meaning of
individual words to predict the
meaning of compound words.
They will also work on
identifying how characters in a
text respond to events and
challenges.
Social Studies
Students will identify the
relationships among rights and
responsibilities as well as
democratic ideas. They will also
work on effective social
interactions with other students
and their teachers.
Math
Students will work on counting
within 1000 by skip-counting
by 10s and 100s. They will
read and write numbers to
1000 using base ten numerals,
number names, and expanded
form. We will also start
practicing mental strategies to
solve sums to 20. Students will
also compare 3 digit numbers
using words and symbols such
as: greater than, less than,
and equal to (<,>,=).
Writing
Students will recount their
experiences and write
narratives based on small
moments in their lives. They
will work on editing their
writing for correct grammar
and punctuation.
Science
Students will describe Earth’s
materials and identify the
properties of rocks and soil.
They will also describe the
Earth’s surface and
atmosphere as well as identify
the properties of water.
