Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Coordinator, Native American Programs, position is physically located in the Western Area Extension Office for the University of Nevada, Cooperative Extension (UNCE). The work area covers the Native American Reservation areas of Pyramid Lake (Washoe County), Walker River (Mineral, Lyon, Churchill Counties) and Owyhee (Duck Valley – Elko County) in northern Nevada. The Coordinator is responsible for project and budget management of grants received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) concerning provision of educational information and activities regarding nutrition, organizational development, natural resources, and agriculture for constituents within the above areas. The position supervises professional staff at various locations to ensure grant requirements and deadlines are met and guidelines are properly followed. The Coordinator submits necessary reports to funding agencies and provides proposals for new and continuing funding for this and other projects. The position reports to the Area Director for the Western Area Extension Office and is grant funded. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Coordinator makes decisions within the guidelines of the program. Position has direct contact with public agencies and is responsible for a specialized set of activities within the unit. The individual works closely with the Area Director of Western Area Extension on major decisions associated with the position, but must work independently, with initiative, on a day-to-day basis. Decisions overseen by the Director involve finding resources for projects, reporting of project activities, and assistance with Tribal political mediation and conflict resolution. The incumbent works with grant funded federal budgets and must be able to ensure compliance with specific rules and regulations and accurate effort reporting for each grant or contract. Impact: The overall project oversight by the Coordinator is crucial to the success of the project(s) which will enhance services and resources to clients throughout the covered region. Decisions and judgments determine future funding of the project(s) and may reflect positively or negatively on UNCE and WEXT. If WEXT’s reputation is diminished, the ability of WEXT to attract other grants and contracts would negatively affect the University’s research mission. If decisions are properly made, the department increases its chance for contract renewal and for obtaining additional contracts. Successful events ensure participants receive a high value education on topics presented. Inadequate performance may result in contractual obligation failures and dissatisfaction resulting in loss of future funding. 4.
