The Coordinator, Native American Programs, position is physically located in the Western Area
Extension Office for the University of Nevada, Cooperative Extension (UNCE). The work area covers
the Native American Reservation areas of Pyramid Lake (Washoe County), Walker River (Mineral,
Lyon, Churchill Counties) and Owyhee (Duck Valley – Elko County) in northern Nevada. The
Coordinator is responsible for project and budget management of grants received from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) concerning provision of educational information and activities
regarding nutrition, organizational development, natural resources, and agriculture for constituents
within the above areas. The position supervises professional staff at various locations to ensure grant

necessary reports to funding agencies and provides proposals for new and continuing funding for this
and other projects. The position reports to the Area Director for the Western Area Extension Office
and is grant funded.

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Coordinator makes decisions within the guidelines of the program. Position has direct contact
with public agencies and is responsible for a specialized set of activities within the unit. The individual
works closely with the Area Director of Western Area Extension on major decisions associated with
the position, but must work independently, with initiative, on a day-to-day basis. Decisions overseen
by the Director involve finding resources for projects, reporting of project activities, and assistance
with Tribal political mediation and conflict resolution. The incumbent works with grant funded federal
budgets and must be able to ensure compliance with specific rules and regulations and accurate effort
reporting for each grant or contract.
Impact:
The overall project oversight by the Coordinator is crucial to the success of the project(s) which will
enhance services and resources to clients throughout the covered region. Decisions and judgments
determine future funding of the project(s) and may reflect positively or negatively on UNCE and
WEXT. If WEXT’s reputation is diminished, the ability of WEXT to attract other grants and contracts
would negatively affect the University’s research mission. If decisions are properly made, the
department increases its chance for contract renewal and for obtaining additional contracts.
Successful events ensure participants receive a high value education on topics presented. Inadequate
performance may result in contractual obligation failures and dissatisfaction resulting in loss of future
funding.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
