FEBRUARY 25, 2013
Present: Dean Connie Foster, Deana Groves, Timothy Mullin, Brian Coutts,
Haiwang Yuan, Jennifer Wilson, Eric Fisher Bryan Carson and Jan Renusch
New Acquisitions Site: Crystal Bowling, Amanda Hardin, and Shaden Melky,
members of the Libraries New Acquisitions Study Group, chaired by Haiwang,
gave the LLC a presentation on Pinterest, “a pinboard-style photo sharing
website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections”
(Wikipedia) and its application in the WKU Libraries to feature new
acquisitions, events, and several other themes. The Study Group including
Deana Groves and Jennifer Wilson will meet again to discuss goals, workflow,
and guidelines for the Libraries’ social network services. Connie suggested
that the group meet with Corie Martin the Public Affairs Manager/Creative Web
Services for the university.
Minutes: The February 18, 2013, minutes were approved as submitted on a
motion by Brian Coutts and a second by Bryan Carson. Connie suggested that
when feasible the minutes be sent via email along with the meeting reminder
so the LLC can review them prior to the meeting.
Dean’s Report/Announcements:
Status of NECS Statistics Collection: Brian distributed and reviewed copies
of an IES report. Haiwang will put the link on the library page under
statistics.
Grants/Assessment: Bryan reported that John Edmonds is confirmed as the
gospel speaker for the America’s Music event. He distributed a calendar of
the events in March and April. Jennifer will start promotional materials
soon.
-Bryan distributed copies of the 2012 and 2013 library surveys for review,
comparison, comments, and suggestions. He asked that responses be given to
him before the next LLC meeting. Connie suggested that Bryan send the council
the survey link.
Library Systems Office: Eric gave highlights from the LSO:
DLPS: Resolved problem with a keyboard and mouse not functioning properly;
created an “Item Replacement Fee Form” for Circulation; corrected the macro
used for the Mag Strip reader at the ERC; corrected a non-functioning monitor
issue; corrected printer issue in Circulation.
DLTS: Corrected Banner login and printing in landscape issue for one staff
member; moved and reinstalled a printer for use in Bib. Access.
Library Systems: Added AD users. provided Audio/Video setup for KY Live event
at Barnes and Noble; Glasgow public computers were upgraded to Windows 7.
Marketing: Jennifer reported that she is working on promotion for the US Bank
Art Show.
-There will be an ad for the Commons in Tuesday’s College Heights Herald.
-An ad for the Speaker Series will be in the Sunday Daily News.
-Jennifer is going to do research on campus digital signs.
Web & Emerging Technologies: Haiwang reported that he is training Library
Systems Office staff on photo processing and publishing and podcast creation
for the Libraries’ social network such as Flickr and Podcast. He will also be
giving trainings on video production and publication. He is going to convene
a Web & Emerging Technologies Advisory Committee meeting to assign
maintenance of Libraries’ Web pages during his sabbatical, leaving
major projects to the LSO. Another item on the agenda will be the
University’s initiative to implement responsive Web sites adaptable to
different sizes of screens, particularly those on smart phones.
-Haiwang distributed a handout from the University’s Academic Technology
Advisory Council. It listed items from the report by Dr. Bob Owens, VP of the
University IT Division.
Department Reports:
DLPS: Brian reported that a memorial service for our colleague Therese Baker
whose career in WKU Libraries spanned 30 years will be held at the WKU Chapel
at noon on Monday, March 4.
-WKU reported FTE staff of 106 made up of 34 librarians, 5 professional
staff, 46 staff and 21 student assistants (the equivalent of 84¼ part time
assistants). Salaries totaled $3,180,201(47%)and the operating budget was
$3,715,804 (53%). The library added 22,743 (books, serial backfiles, and
documents), acquired 22,584 microforms, and 1,141 a/v materials. At the end
of 2012 collections consisted of:
 1,873,820 books, serials backfiles, and other paper materials
 7,725 e-books
 2,280,958 microforms
 109,653 audiovisual materials
-Author Jason Howard, whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The
Nation, the Louisville Review and on NPR will talk about his newest book A
Few Honest Words: The Kentucky Roots of Popular Music published recently by
the University Press of Kentucky.
-Connie Foster will talk about her recent trip to Alaska in this month’s
We’ve Been Everywhere Series feature in Helm 100.
-The two finalists for Department Head of Library Technical Services Jack
Montgomery and Deana Groves will give public presentations on Friday, March 1
at 10 am in Helm 5 (Montgomery) and Tuesday, March 5 at 10 am in Helm 5
(Groves). All faculty and staff are invited to attend.
DLTS: Deana reported that Jack Montgomery has been invited by the ALCTS
Acquisitions Section to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Staff
Retooling: Adapting to Change in Technical Services” during the 2013 ALA
annual conference.
-Circulation now has a spine label printer allowing student assistants to
resolve label issues without sending items to Tech Services.
DLSC: Timothy reported that Sue Lynn McDaniel has returned to work after an
extended illness.
