POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Academic Advisor Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Professional B JOB SUMMARY: Participate in the development, coordination, and implementation of retention initiatives, academic advising, articulation and other related services including implementing programs to increase student enrollment to ensure student success. Assist and advise students in making well informed college and career choices. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 20% 1. Assist in the development and implementation of retention initiatives by working with faculty to provide timely feedback to students about their academic progress. Identify students whose behaviors indicate a lack of academic success strategies and refer these students for academic skills assistance, including tutoring, counseling, and/or career guidance. 2. Advise and provide students with degree plans that meet their short-term as well as long-term educational and career objectives and assist them in developing their class schedules. 20% 3. Support counselors in monitoring and following-up with students on their academic progress. Assist students who are in jeopardy of withdrawing from the college by working in conjunction with a counselor to develop a plan for academic improvement. 20% 4. Maintain knowledge of College Readiness Standards and El Paso Community College program requirements, and act as liaison between students and faculty. Create and maintain record retention system to document students’ status and progress. 15% 5. Under the guidance of a counselor or coordinator, develop, plan and conduct on-going educational seminars and/or workshops for students and faculty on strategies, policies/procedures, and issues pertaining to student academic advisement and student retention and degree completion. 15% 6. Assist the coordinator in carrying out activities that support the mission of the Early Alert Program. 5% 7. EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years in an educational environment related to student development and counseling. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. • • • • • • Skills/Abilities: Strong communication skills, both verbal and written are required; Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; Ability to maintain and foster strong relationships with state agencies and local educational institutions is required; Knowledge of regulations established by the State and policies and procedures of higher education; Ability to work in a diverse environment and be sensitive to issues of diversity and inclusion; Keep abreast of trends and best practices regarding student retention. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer and other equipment associated with an office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of spreadsheet, word-processing, database, e-mail, and presentation software.
