POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: PBX Operator Non-Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Classified B JOB SUMMARY: Assist staff and general public by providing basic information, routing alls and assisting with basic questions regarding telephone features and the district’s audix voice mail. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Operate multi-line switchboard; assist internal and external callers by providing and researching general information or routing telephone calls as appropriate. YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 50% 2. Assist staff with national and international telephone calls and faxes; direct callers with user related telephone problems. 40% 3. Locate departmental personnel with digital pagers and cellular phones. Update operator materials. Assist telecommunication’s staff as needed and perform general office duties as required. 10% REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Telecommunications Manager ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: High school equivalent plus six months in specialized trade, vocational or business school. EXPERIENCE: One (1) year. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Computer literate, familiar with Definity G-3 PBX Switchboard. Knowledge of certain phone features such as Audix and transferring of calls. Ability to handle a large volume of calls and have a clear speaking voice. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer, fax, telephone, copier, and other equipment associated with an office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Alternative or combined skills in understanding, counseling, and/or influencing people are important in achieving job objectives, causing action, understanding others, or changing behavior; and, skills of persuasiveness or assertiveness, as well as sensitivity to the point of view of others. WORKING CONDITIONS: Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with occasional distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.
