POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: EXTENDED TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Specialist Financial Aid Specialist – Processing/Intake Non-Exempt CATEGORY: Classified GRADE: D JOB SUMMARY: Perform specialized duties in the administration of student financial aid services and serve as an advisor to student aid recipients; responsible for interpreting complex rules, regulations, procedures and policies and explaining them to students, parents, and outside entities; responsible for complex decisions requiring initiative and judgment in responding to individual student needs. YEARLY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: PERCENT OF TIME 1. Review results of financial aid applications and accompanying documentation 50% to ensure accuracy, completeness, and where inaccuracies are found make corrections before processing; enter new/revised data into computer system, maintain files, and review reports for completion. Review information from federal databases (NSLDS, INS, and Selective Service) to comply with federal rules and regulations. 2. Interview students to determine financial aid needs and make recommendations based on those needs; assist students with completion of applications; process Special Circumstances and Dependency Overrides for students eligible for special consideration. 20% 3. Advise students of issues that may need to be resolved in order to continue or reinstate eligibility; assist in the registration process as it relates to financial aid eligibility and other special programs. 20% 4. Skills/Abilities: Good communications skills, good public relations and a team players attitude; ability to work independently in a high pressure environment and strong telephone etiquette skills. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer, fax, telephone, copier, and other equipment associated with an office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require little physical effort in work with light (up to 10lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Alternative or combined skills in understanding, counseling, and/or influencing people are important in achieving job objectives, causing action, understanding others, or changing behavior; and, skills of persuasiveness or assertiveness, as well as sensitivity to the point of view of others.
