POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA Status: ALP Lab Aid Non-exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Classified C JOB SUMMARY: Position is responsible for providing tutorial, training, and/or instructional lab support to students and laboratory personnel in Americana Language Program laboratory. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Under limited supervision, assists students with course and/or laboratory assignments. Works with students individually or in small groups to demonstrate procedures and use of equipment and materials, or review classroom material. Monitor lab activities to ensure a safe learning environment. YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 70% 2. Assists with preparation of instructional materials; sets up/moves laboratory equipment and supplies required for demonstration of processes; maintains and cleans equipment; ensures equipment is in working order; may do routine repair/service. 15% Checks out learning materials and maintains records; conducts annual inventory of supplies/equipment; assists with scheduling of learning facility. Assists in the preparation of reports and correspondences. May check lab attendance. 15% 3. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Senior level lab personnel and/or Instructional Dean. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: One Year of College or equivalent EXPERIENCE: Two (2) Years SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Strong interpersonal and writing skills in addition to the ability to operate and maintain assigned equipment. 2. Equipment Used: Equipment customary to assigned lab setting. 3. Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Effective: 4/1/05 Page 1 of 2 Duties require little to moderate physical effort in working with light (up to 30lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed may cause light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: This position requires the ability to communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and other members of the organization to request and transmit information. Alternative or combined skills in understanding, counseling, and/or influencing people are important in achieving job objectives, causing action, understanding others, or changing behavior; and skills of persuasiveness or assertiveness, as well as sensitivity to the point of view of others. WORKING CONDITIONS: Job is performed in a laboratory setting with many and frequent distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements and biohazard/chemical material.
