ACS Lab Specialist 1 POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Academic Computer Lab Specialist Non-exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Classified E (Technology Support) JOB SUMMARY: Position is responsible for providing direct tutorial, training, and/or instructional lab support to students and laboratory personnel in an open lab when an instructor is generally not present. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 1. Oversee and coordinate the activities of students, faculty, and staff to insure a safe learning environment. Provide orientation to faculty, staff, and students in the use of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies as well as services provided. Provide work direction to any assigned full-time, part-time, and work-study personnel. 30% 2. Assist students with course and/or laboratory assignments. Provide support to students and faculty in the programming classes to include, but not limited to, techniques and methods of flow charting, system design, properly locating and correcting syntax errors, logging on to the AS/400, and create a COBOL program. 30% 3. Assist with the preparation of instructional material, set up lab equipment, and acts as a learning facilitator via customized workshops and learning sessions for individuals and/or groups. Skills/Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both oral and written. Well-developed computer skills in the area of networking, hardware, and software. Capable of using and assisting students in the use of commercial application packages and operating systems. Ability to problem solve using proprietary software (e.g. Microsoft Access, Excel Terminal emulation, AS/400, and Plato). 2. Equipment Used: Personal computers and related equipment found in a computer laboratory, e.g. RJ45, Crimpier, Routers, Hubs, and Network Cables. 3. Software Used: A variety of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software to include Notepad, C and C++-programming, HTML, RPG, Cobol, Visual Basic, FrontPage, Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Products, Corel Office Suite, and Banner. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require little to moderate physical effort in working with light (up to 30lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed may cause light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Skills of persuasiveness or assertiveness, as well as, sensitivity to the other person’s point of view are often required to influence behavior, change an opinion, turn a situation around, cause action, or understanding in others. This level of interpersonal skills is required in positions, which regularly interact with others, through personal contact or presentations, within the organization or members in the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: Job is performed in laboratory setting or comparable working area with many and frequent distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.
