UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Norwegian Level 3 Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Norwegian level 2+ at UCL Language Centre or equivalent. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students with a good basic knowledge of Norwegian to develop speaking, comprehension, reading and writing to an intermediate level. Students should be able to express themselves in Norwegian in most common situations. Cultural awareness of registers and habits will be developed. Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach authentic material will be enhanced. Functions - Expressing pain and illness, concern and empathy Expressing opinions; agreement and disagreement Discussing news and sports from written and aural sources Higher levels of detail in descriptive exercises Complaining and recommending Using financial services Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - Medical topics, the body Media and news channels investigated Sports Ingredients and instructions for making things Basic cooking vocabulary Life in Norway, historical perspectives, politics Norwegian traditions and celebrations Technology Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Pronunciation, rhythm and stress. Overall syntax comprehension Extended vocabularies and standard phrases UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 Grammar - All verb tenses and their standard usages More Irregular verbs Possessive-reflexive pronouns Reflexive verb phrases Use of passive vs. active voice Personal pronouns Prepositions related to duration, length and distance of time Imperative and instructions. Learning Resources Books - Ellingsen & MacDonald: Her på berget, Cappelen, Oslo - Teacher lecture notes and work sheets - Authentic material as handouts - A Norwegian Grammar, Norwegian – An Essential Grammar, Åse-Berit and Rolf Strandskogen, Routledge, London, (different editions) - Dictionary: A standard dictionary giving the Norwegian noun genders for English entries.
