UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Norwegian Level 1+ Prerequisite for entry Basic knowledge of Norwegian, successful completion of Norwegian syllabus 1 at UCL Language Centre or equivalent. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students to function at a basic everyday survival level (basic vocabulary and grammar). Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach authentic material will be covered. Functions - Describing people and your home Ordering various foods Talking about work and leisure Talking about present and daily activities, incl. studies Asking and answering questions Talking about feelings Some accuracy in expressing various past tenses. Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - Question words and question syntax Describing your home and work Seasons of the year, nature Food and meals, restaurants and home Activities to do with everyday duties Age and register of language use Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - The elementary grammatical functions, pronunciation and stress patterns Grammar - Question-words More reflexive pronouns Future tenses and perfect tenses UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 - Modal verbs and infinitive use Possessive pronouns Sentence structures, syntactical conventions Adverbial phrases Noun phrases Verb phrases Some basic irregular verbs Learning Resources Books - Ellingsen & MacDonald: Norsk på en-to-tre, Cappelen, Oslo - Teacher lecture notes and work sheets - A Norwegian Grammar, Norwegian – An Essential Grammar, Åse-Berit and Rolf Strandskogen, Routledge, London, (different editions) - Dictionary: A standard dictionary giving the Norwegian noun genders for English entries.
