UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Norwegian Level 4+ Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Norwegian level 4 at UCL Language Centre or equivalent. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students who have an advanced knowledge of Norwegian to develop further their fluency and appropriateness of language use. Students should be able to comprehend most discussions and debates on an extensive range of issues as well as interact with a wide range of situations using complex and linguistically sophisticated structures. Socio-cultural issues will be extensively covered. Functions - Ability to partake in most non-specialist debates Presenting one’s ideas clearly, and cope with interruptions and ‘dynamic’ communication Improving reading skills of complex text Improving listening skills Develop a fuller overview of Norwegian popular and political issues. Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered The course will to a greater extent than the lower levels depend on student interests and input, to give a more rewarding focus to the fields of study, but will include the following: - New technologies Press and media Arts, culture, crafts Professional tasks, duties and work related issues Historical developments Trade links Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Recognising/understanding various registers and dialects UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 Grammar - All verb tenses including non-standard usage Correct position of negation in sub-clauses (position of relative adverbs (ikke, alltid, kanskje, aldri..) Logical and emotive registers and structures Detailed use of subjunctions and conjunctions Accuracy in prepositional use Wide use of expressions and phrases appropriate to various registers and topics. Stylistic levels, rhetorical devices.
