UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Norwegian Level 2 Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Norwegian syllabus Level 1+ at UCL Language Centre, or equivalent. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to give students an opportunity to revise their survival skills and acquire more sophisticated ways of dealing with practical matters in everyday life. This includes revision and consolidation of vocabulary, grammar, syntax and phonetics. Cultural background and material on Norwegian society will be covered. Functions - Directions Physical and emotional characteristics of people Description of tasks, procedures and instructions Relating events and stories Talking about your life, hobbies and interests Making phone calls, writing simple letters and emails. Talking about family, friends and relatives Sports and leisure activities in more detail Description of weekly tasks Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - More practical matters, getting by… Public transport Planning your life Expressions of time Animals Newspaper articles and short descriptions Using basic media, emails, letters, phone Listening skills, practice and training Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Verb inversion with adverbial phrases Use of negation UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 - Pronunciation and stress patterns Tonal difference introduced. Grammar - Possessive pronouns, a full range The prepositional genitive use Adverbial phrases made from prepositions Use of temporary pronouns Quantifiers, countable vs. non countable Relative clauses, sentence structures. Clipped grammar (Newspaper headlines, signs, advertising) Learning Resources Books - Ellingsen & MacDonald: Stein på Stein, Cappelen, Oslo - Teacher lecture notes and work sheets - Authentic material as handouts - A Norwegian Grammar, Norwegian – An Essential Grammar, Åse-Berit and Rolf Strandskogen, Routledge, London, (different editions) - Dictionary: A standard dictionary giving the Norwegian noun genders for English entries.
