UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Norwegian Level 4 Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Norwegian level 3+ at UCL Language Centre or equivalent. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students who already have a good knowledge of Norwegian to acquire an advanced level. Students will be able to communicate in most situations in a Norwegian context, converse with native speakers and follow debates on a wide range of issues as well as express themselves with more complexity. Cultural awareness will be further developed and raised. Functions - Discussing opinions, reactions and obligations Debating, commenting, explaining, describing events Express nuance in both opinion and pragmatic requirements Ability to express insecurity outside the linguistic code Improving listening and reading skills using various authentic material Presentations of everyday material and topics. Skills in the acquisition of knowledge and information from individuals and institutions in Norway Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered The course content of this syllabus will be based around a reflection on the nature of contemporary society and current affairs. The topic may include the following (as appropriate, depending on students’ interests): - Educational institutions Overview of literary figures and main artists The countryside in Norway. Climate and ecology. Spelling Science and technology in Norway Folk tales and oral traditions Focus on some specific artists and writers, Ibsen, Hamsun, Munch and Grieg Historical focus, emigration and immigration UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Speech patterns, rhythm and stress. Tone.
