Little Sugar Creek Stream and floodplain enhancements near NoDa Heavy equipment in, ugly creek will soon be out! The restoration of Little Sugar Creek near Cullman Avenue and 36th Street has begun. Storm Water Services is now repairing the eroded stream bed and jagged banks. Gentle curves will be added to slow the flow of the water. A pollution-removing rain garden will be added to the floodplain. When the stream work is finished next March, this section of Little Sugar Creek north of uptown will be healthier for aquatic life such as fish. The goal of this Storm Water Services project is cleaner water. Funding comes from the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water fees. In recent years, a dozen flood-prone buildings along this section of Little Sugar Creek were purchased and torn down. In the open space, amenities may eventually be added for recreation, arts and culture. Those attractions would require additional outside funding.
