Little Sugar Creek Stream restoration near NoDa Additional stream work complete An unexpected chapter has been added to the story of this Storm Water Services stream restoration project. In 2013, owners of three additional flood-prone properties near Little Sugar Creek and Cullman Avenue sold their land to county government. This brings to 16 the number of parcels purchased in this project area through the local floodplain buyout program. This fall, Storm Water Services restored the natural path of the creek along those three additional parcels. This latest work expands the stream restoration project which began in 2010. A total of 1,100 linear feet of the creek’s bed and banks in the NoDa area has now been repaired. As part of the project, gentle curves were added to the stream path to reduce erosion. And the surrounding floodplain is being restored as open space, providing a safe place to store some excess water during heavy rain. The purpose of stream restoration is improved water quality. This project will not stop the creek from flooding. However, flood damage will be reduced because more than a dozen buildings have been permanently removed from the floodplain. A FEMA grant helped pay for the buyouts. Money for the stream and floodplain restoration came from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services fees.
