Little Sugar Creek Stream and floodplain enhancements near NoDa Decades after its path was artificially straightened, Little Sugar Creek now flows through “S” shaped curves just north of uptown. Storm Water Services has completed the restoration of more than 1,100 linear feet of stream. The gentle meanders slow the flow of the water and reduce bank erosion. The once-scoured and jagged banks have been smoothed. Native plants will help hold the soil in place. Along the stream bed, some sections are shallow and rocky; others are deeper. Both are necessary for healthy aquatic life. A pollution-removing rain garden has been added to the floodplain. Funding for the stream work comes from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund and Storm Water Services. This project will not prevent the stream from flooding. Future flood losses were reduced by buying a dozen high-risk buildings near the creek. Those buildings were torn down and the floodplain is now open space. Long-range plans call for the restored floodplain to include amenities for recreation and the arts. Those features would require outside funding.
