Information on Proposed Storm Water Project in Your Area
Charlotte Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSWS) has initiated
the planning phase of a potential stream restoration project on
Torrence Creek Tributary #1 in Huntersville, North Carolina. The
proposed project area extends from just south of Gilead Road to
I-77 (see back for map).
The proposed project is the third in a sequence of projects intended
to restore Torrence Creek and all its tributaries to more natural
conditions.
In the last 20 years, the channel has been exposed to an incredible
increase in stream flow during rain events. This increase has been
brought about by intense development that added paved and
impervious surfaces which in turn increases the amount of runoff
going to the creek.
The result is excessive erosion that leads to the collapse of stream
banks, tree loss and the deposition of silt downstream. Thousands of
tons of dirt have been carried
to Mountain Island Lake just
upstream of the main drinking
water supply intake for CharlotteMecklenburg Utilities.
The potential project CMSWS is
planning for Torrence Creek Tributary #1 will re-engineer the channel to both
safely accommodate the increased flow and return the stream to a more natural
state that will allow aquatic insects and fish to thrive. By necessity, the resulting
channel will be wider with more shallowly sloping banks. This will most likely
require the removal of large trees adjacent to the stream bank, however it is
important to point out that many of these trees will eventually be lost due to
erosion of the stream bank.
Similarly, private property may be impacted by the potential project. For
CMSWS to conduct work on private property, easements will need to be secured
prior to construction. These easements allow CMSWS contractors to enter
the property, conduct work and return to the property in the future should
maintenance be needed.
There will be a public meeting held to discuss the impacts to private property owners and details of the project in the
future. For more information on the project or water quality in the area contact:
