Miller Slam-Dunks Fermilab Physics Slam
COD Speech Associate Professor and Emcee of the second
annual Physics Slam at Fermilab Chris Miller (right)
ponders a question from one of the 800 audience members
at the sold-out event. Joining him on stage are Physics
Slam contenders (left to right) Don Lincoln (Large
Hadron Collider/Higgs Boson particle); Tia Miceli
(MicroBooNE Neutrino experiment); Hugh Lippincott
(COUPP experiment); Chris “Elvis” Polly (Muon g-2
experiment) and the evening’s winner Brian Nord (Dark
Energy Survey). Each of the Fermilab physicists had 10
minutes to describe their research in layman’s terms, and
then audience members selected the winners. Watch the

‘Doctor’ Breuder Assesses Patient at Sim Lab
President “Doctor” Dr. Robert L. Breuder quizzes a
nursing student about a “patient’s” symptoms and
treatment steps during a recent visit to the College’s
Hospital Simulation Lab, located in the Health and Science
Center. Dr. Breuder role-played both a doctor and nursing
student, learning about the complicated steps in assessing
one of the four high-fidelity manikins in the four replicated
hospital rooms that recreate emergency and routine
situations for students in the program. Please click here for

Culinary Arts Student Marija
Benson was selected as a
finalist in the sixth annual
America’s Best Raisin Bread
competition hosted by the
California Raisin Marketing
Board (CRMB). This prestigious
baking industry competition
recognizes professional and upand-coming bakers from across the country. Thirty-six finalists
received a complimentary trip to the International Baking
Industry Exposition in Las Vegas, Nev. “I was a bit nervous, but I
learned a lot, and I met a lot of talented people,” Benson said.
“Overall, it was a fabulous experience. It’s a great feeling to know
that your products are enjoyed by other people.” Read More
New Computer Forensics
Certification this Spring
COD will offer two computer forensic
courses this spring that will prepare
students to sit for the AccessData
Certification Exam. “Once certified,
students can work for organizations
such as criminal justice departments, law firms and the court
system extracting information that can be used as evidence in an
investigation,” said Sam Shamsuddin, Assistant Professor of
Computer and Internetworking Technologies, who will teach both

Kramer and Team Earn ‘Top Chefs’ Award
Culinary Arts Associate Professor David Kramer and students

were congratulated by President Robert L. Breuder, Board
Chairman Erin Birt and Paula Gleason (right) from the
West Suburban Community Pantry for earning the “People’s
Choice Award for Top Chefs” at the WSCP’s “Continental
Challenge” fundraiser. Competitors from the Marriott Chicago
Naperville, Seven Bridges Golf Club, the Westin and Rosebud
restaurant prepared French cuisine that was voted on by guests.
The event raised $33,000, which translated into 60 tons of food
for those in need.

Kudos to…10 COD employees who traveled to Triton
College for the annual Northern Illinois Networking
(NIN) Staff Exchange for support staff. The
exchange provides an opportunity for support staff to
network with counterparts from other community
colleges, share ideas and engage in problem-solving
activities. In total 70 participants attended from 12
institutions. Kudos to NIN members Judy Coates and
Gina Paladino from the Teaching and Learning
Center who coordinated this year’s event. Kudos also to
the following employee participants: Kathy Striplin,
Facilities Administrative Assistant; Sara Alcantara,
Admissions Specialist; Diana Alferez, Degree Audit
Coordinator; Jackie Reuland, Manager, Center for
Access and Accommodations; Kyra Robinson,

Coordinator; Cathy Trauernicht, Testing Assistant,

WDCB Food/Pledge Drive
WDCB is hosting its annual Food/Pledge Drive through Tuesday,
Dec. 10. For every $100 donated to WDCB, the station has arranged
for a sponsor to contribute TEN MEALS to feed hungry families
during the holidays. The meals will be split between the Northern
Illinois Food Band and the Greater Chicago Food Depository. All
