Gov. Pat Quinn Meets With Veterans at COD
Student Trustee Stephanie Torres spends a few minutes
with Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn during a recent visit by the
Governor to a veterans event held at the College. Hosted by
College of DuPage and the Illinois Department of Veterans
Affairs, “Mission: Veterans 2 Entrepreneurs,” was a free
program designed to provide veteran entrepreneurs and
business owners with tools for success. During his
comments, Gov. Quinn noted that businesses owned and
operated by veterans currently generate more than 1.2

Study Abroad
Earns National
Recognition
The COD Study Abroad
program has the second
largest number of
participants among all
community colleges in
the nation according to a recent report issued by the
Institute of International Education (IIE). During the
2011-2012 academic year, College of DuPage enrolled 179
students in international programs. Miami-Dade College in
Florida was listed first with 190 students. According to COD
Study Abroad Program Specialist Susan Kerby, the
recognition by the IIE demonstrates the commitment of the
College toward international learning. “We are very pleased
with this recognition,” Kerby said. “COD has a long history of
supporting field and experiential learning. In fact, we were
one of the first community colleges in the nation to offer
study abroad programs. Being acknowledged by the IIE
affirms our ongoing commitment to the importance of global
experiences for our students.” Read More

Two Additional Centers Earn LEED Certification
The Campus Maintenance Center has earned Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from
the U.S. Green Building Council, while the Seaton Computing
Center has earned Silver certification. The CMC and SCC are
the most recent facilities constructed and renovated on the
College of DuPage main campus to receive LEED certification.
Click here to see photos of these projects. The others include
the Health Sciences Center, Gold; Technical Education Center,
Silver; and Homeland Security Education Center, Certified.
President Dr. Robert L. Breuder said green technology was
a key component of the College’s extensive campus renovation
plan. “This recognition demonstrates our commitment to being
energy efficient and environmentally responsible,” Dr. Breuder
said. “It is especially gratifying that our Campus Maintenance
Center earned Gold certification, considering that part of our
Operations department was previously located in one of the
‘temporary’ structures built more than 40 years ago, long
before modern green technology was developed.” Read More
Plus 50 Program
College of DuPage was recently
selected to join the Plus 50
Encore Completion Program, a
national effort to train 10,000
baby boomers for new jobs in
health care, education and
social services. The program is
sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges
(AACC). COD will assist adults age 50 and over in completing
degrees or certificates in high-demand careers that give back to the
community. “The educational needs and interests of adults are
changing. More than ever, baby boomers are looking to continue
their contributions to their families and communities while
continuing their own growth,” said Joe Cassidy, COD Dean,
Continuing Education/Extended Learning. “We continue to see an
increasing number of adult students retooling, updating skills and
exploring their passion for new career paths. The Plus 50 Encore
Completion Program will help us meet the evolving educational
needs of these students while extending the College's mission of
serving as a center for excellence in teaching and learning for
students of all ages.” Read More

Kudos to…Dental Hygiene Assistant and Santa’s main elf
Lynne Grezek, who organized this year’s Toys for Tots
drive that brought in 1,022 items to bring Christmas to local
children and teenagers. Special thanks to the Office of
Student Life for sponsoring the collection. Additional
kudos to Jeff Burton from Staff Service who tirelessly
helped deliver the regional center toys to the College’s main
campus and “behind the scenes” elf Program Support
Specialist Colleen Prola who helped with toy pickups,
delivery and sorting during her lunch hours and after work.
THANK YOU to all who participated in this year’s drive!
Even More Kudos to…the COD Nursing program faculty
and senior nursing students, who hosted a two-day blood drive
last month. Eighty students, staff and community members offered
to participate. In total, 61 units of blood were obtained, which has
the potential to help approximately 183 people! Special thanks to
the senior nursing students who made this day work by carrying
equipment, monitoring the donors during and after the procedure,
and manning and supplying goodies for a treats table for
participants.
