March 4, 2016 Black History Month Events Wow Audiences Energetic performances, thought-provoking speakers and dynamic displays were among the festivities at College of DuPage’s Black History Month celebration. Events were sponsored by the College’s Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion. The celebration kicked off Feb. 1 with performers from the African Dance and Music Institute and concluded with a rousing performance by Soul Children of Chicago. Anti-Terrorism Experts Offer Free ‘Soft Target’ Program Experts in “soft target” (schools, arenas, malls, parks, theaters) protection from terrorism will host a free on-site and streamed program sponsored by the Homeland Security Training Institute (HSTI) on Tuesday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (CST). Anti-terrorism experts Dr. Mike Fagel, Dr. Jennifer Hesterman and Greg Benson will provide this free course to assist soft targets in keeping their properties safe while helping them pinpoint security weaknesses in their communities. “This is a great program to help people nationwide prepare for, deter and mitigate potential attacks,” said HSTI Director Tom Brady. “This is an opportunity that should not be missed. Culinary Students Win Gold Medal at State Competition Team members (left to right) Jess Worthen, Shin Balagtas (captain), Casey Waltemath, Ashley Sabo and Eric Estrada took first place and earned a gold medal during the recent American Culinary Federation’s Illinois State Competition. It was the second consecutive year the team placed first in the state and its first year winning gold. The team now advances to the regional competition in St. Louis in March. “To have backto-back wins at the state level is a huge accomplishment,” said Tim Meyers, Professor of Culinary Arts at College of DuPage. “Some schools have been competing for 10 or 15 years, and this was only our fourth time competing at the state level. We’re fortunate to have learned so much each year going head-tohead against the best schools in the state.” Read More Ethiopian refugee turned Harvard graduate and author Selamawi Asgedom (above) addressed attendees at the third annual Black Student Leadership Conference at College of DuPage. Aimed at African American high school juniors and current COD students, the conference welcomed approximately 260 students from 17 high schools. The event includeded college student and counselor discussion panels, a Mock College Admissions game, Career Exploration Express and a College Fair featuring representatives from 49 colleges and universities. Read More Student Anthony Perry Wins ‘Apollo Live!’ Competition College of DuPage Fine Arts student Anthony Perry (above) from Lisle earned first place for his moving rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” at the inaugural “Apollo Live!” Talent Competition held at the College’s McAninch Arts Center Belushi Performance Hall. The event, attended by more than 100 students, staff and community members, was produced, created and directed by Diana Martinez, Director of the McAninch Arts Center, as part of the series of Black History Month events. COD Offers New Interactive Media Degree The new Interactive Media degree at College of DuPage combines courses from three programs to best prepare students for careers developing web sites, digital interfaces and other interactive media applications. Recently approved by the Illinois Community College Board, the Associate in Applied Science degree requires coursework from the Graphic Design, Motion Picture/TV and Computer Information Systems programs. This cross-discipline approach provides students with the skills for entry-level employment as interface designers, user experience designers, interaction designers and front-end developers. Students can also transfer to a four-year school to pursue a bachelor’s degree. “The Interactive Media degree ties courses together in a logical way,” said John Callegari, Professor and Coordinator of COD’s Graphic Design program. “Interdisciplinary studies are becoming the norm, and interactive design is both a technical pursuit and a creative endeavor.” Read More Culinary, Hospitality Prepares Students for Real World The Culinary, Hospitality Management and Tourism program at College of DuPage is providing crucial hands-on experience for students. Culinary and Baking Program Co-Coordinator Tim Meyers said there are many changes on the horizon for the College’s Culinary program this spring that will provide benefits to students on multiple levels. In addition to the revitalization of current degree and certificate programs, the program will offer increased and broader opportunity for hands-on experience on the College’s campus. “We’re excited about the upcoming changes in the program,” said Meyers. “We will give our students the best real-world experience in both front-of-house and back-ofhouse so they can go successfully into the industry. COD Hosts 24th Annual Asia Symposium March 8 and 9 College of DuPage will host the 24th annual Asia Symposium: “Japan Miyabi (Elegance)” on Tuesday, March 8, and Wednesday, March 9, on the College’s main campus All events are free and open to the public. Hosted by the Asia Committee and sponsored by the College’s Global Education office, the event will feature a broad range of topics related to Japan, including modern day population challenges in Japan, Buddhism, Japanese tattooing practices, modern Japanese history and J-Pop, a martial arts demonstration and film screenings.
