Sunshine Smiles
Opinion
Writing
What do you think?
The Sunshines continue to
collaborate
and persevere through
different challenges in the classroom!
This week, the SUNSHINES
used their own work to learn
about opinion writing. They
focused on stating their
opinions, giving several
reasons, and creating an
ending. We used model
students to view their work,
make corrections, and add to
their piece to make it “more
juicy.” Check out the
learning that is
radiating from
the SUNSHINE
room this week!

Science/Social Studies/Health
* This week, we started our unit on MATTER. We
discussed what matter is and the three types that
we can observe (solids, liquids, gases). We
watched a science video and the kids had to chart
what solids, liquids, and gases they viewed in it.
* We started a science journal of observations on
wonders based on experiments that we are
conducting with matter. This week, we are
focusing on how matter can change based on
weather. We are discovering the “why” and
recording our thoughts in this journal.
Reading
* We continue to work on individual reading
strategies. As a class, we are really focusing
on word patterns and using what we know to
help us figure out new words.
* We are working on identifying different
endings (ed, ing, ies, etc.) in words. We
located them in texts and also added endings
to some word wall words to make
connections.
Math
* We continued to work on looking closely at 100’s
Writing
* *We are finishing up our formal unit on opinion

charts. The SUNSHINES played Tic-Tac-Toe with
100’s chart patterns (homework came home last
Tuesday so that you can play at home).
* We participated in a couple assessments that
focused on different ways to make a number,
hundreds chart fill-in, various ways to fill in
puzzles using multiple geometrical shapes, and
working with place value.
* We continue to work on transferring word wall
words correctly into our writings. Throughout this
week, we have really focused on how to use the
word wall and words that we know to help us
spell other words.
Technology
* The students used the
computers to practiced
leveled texts.
* We took our winter spelling inventory assessment.
