JANUARY 11TH-14TH Sunshine Smiles Opinion Writing What do you think? This week, the SUNSHINES read many mentor books that stated an opinion and gave reasons to support it. They created anchor charts to represent the evidence that they found. Throughout the week, they generated different opinions and reasons to write about. Science Assembly Check out the learning that is radiating from the SUNSHINE room this week! Themes of the Week: * Opinion Writing The Sunshines participated in an engaging assembly that promoted creativity and experimenting. They had to make a bulb light up with using foil and a battery! * Word Wall Review * Reading Goals Opinion Writing Project Based on a Mentor Text * Martin Luther King Jr. Words of the Week: call from some Reading Groups 1 Science/Social Studies/Health * This week, we learned about how Martin Luther Reading King Jr. and his nonviolent actions advocated to promote equality and fairness in out world. The Sunshines participated in discussions, books, the image of the week, and activities to talk about fairness. * We continued reading “LuLu” and talking about how readers think about the story. We focused on noticing how the author uses quotation marks for the dialogue and changed our voices as we read to match the character’s feelings. Writing Math * We focused on the 100’s chart. We deconstructed it and rebuilt it using math language to describe how the numbers connect. We played (and sent home for homework) the game of MISSING NUMBERS. The kids had to use the clues around them to guess the covered up number. For an extra challenge, the kids used a 101-200’s chart, too. * *We formed many opinions throughout the week. We focused on stating an opinion, giving multiple reasons, and ending our opinion by summing it up. At home, see if you can generate some opinion topics. We will be writing more opinions next week. * We practiced filling in number puzzles based on the 100’s and 200’s chart. We talked about place value and had discussions about how all numbers have a place to represent a value. * After learning about Martin Luther King Jr., the kids wrote about why they think that he is important. They also wrote evidence to support Technology their thinking. * The students used the computers to take the second round of the MAP Math Testing.
